Why Buy? Here's Why...

"Philly's always been a R&B town. And for well over 40 years, radio station WDAS has been the place to hear the best of it.

What you have here is the sixth volume of WDAS' CLASSIC SOUL HITS, a series that is (so far) up to eleven volumes of some of most beautiful smooth grooves and soul ballads ever to be recorded.

The Four Tops, EW&F, Heatwave, the Isleys, Ohio Players, Mandrill and, of course, Marvin, Smokey and Lenny Williams too, all are well represented on this CD. But what makes this volume essential are three selections that are no longer available on any other CD in print. For those of us who know and love this music, these are must haves:

Brainstorm: "You Put a Charge In My Life" -- Being primarily a disco/funk group, Brainstorm's natural appeal was with the dancefloor crowd, but this Thom Bell-style song, the only ballad on their 1979 album FUNKY ENTERTAINMENT, does a good job proving that the vocal qualities of singer Belita Woods were overlooked and underappreciated.

The Masqueraders: "(Call Me) The Traveling Man" -- Texas vocal group, the Masqueraders, were truly a soul fan's dream. Originally released on Isaac Hayes' HBS label, this classy ballad made the R&B Top 40 in 1975 but was Number One here in Philadelphia, catching the ear of Kenny Gamble himself. Gamble wanted to work with the group, but they chose to stay with Isaac Hayes. As luck usually works in the music business, Hayes and HBS soon after filed for bankruptcy. Who knows what could've been, right?

Rick James & Teena Marie: "Happy" -- It's Rick James and Teena Marie. If I have to hype to you their duet from his out-of-print THROWIN' DOWN album, then you shouldn't be buying this CD anyway.

So don't let the bad packaging scare you, ignore the tackiness of the advertisements for the supermarkets and the big & tall men's stores, go right to the CD and put it on. You'll be listening some of the sweetest music around.

For worldwide distribution, this CD is also available in another edition as SOUL CLASSICS VOLUME 6 (Collectables 9879)."

"Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, etc. who can ask for anything more on one CD? I brought this CD and I didn't listen to it at first but after sitting down and listening to it from beginning to end, while surfing the net at home after a hard day at work, I was so relaxed listening to "Distant Lover" by Marvin Gaye among others, the next time I cook dinner for my lady and I want to play a CD to set the mood, you best believe it will be this one!"

"This again is WDAS 105.3 doing what they do best; Smooth Groove compilations! They have a knack for picking the perfect songs for a CD! Every time you think, okay, there are no more slow jams for them to come up with...they hit you with another batch of serious slow jams! On this particular CD..along with some serious popular tunes, you also have a few less known, soulful under appreciated cuts like:

1. This Night We Fell - Heatwave

2. Treasure - Brothers Johnson

3. (Call Me) The Traveling Man - The Masqueraders

4. You Put A Charge In My Life - Brainstorm

5. Heaven Must Be Like This - Ohio Players

6. House Of Wood - Mandril

Soul and Romance at its pinnacle!"
