Synopsis

Amazon.com
If contemporary Hollywood sometimes seems an industry bent on recycling itself into oblivion, it still manages the occasional welcome genre-tweaking. Writer-director John Stockwell takes one of the last bastions of salty machismo, the surf film, and gives it a distinct surfer grrrl slant. The resulting film's soundtrack eschews its own share of genre clichés--decades of fuzz guitar, OC ska/surf-punk bluster--for a club-savvy mix that veers from the lush, neo-psych edge of Lenny Kravitz's "If I Could Fall in Love" to Beenie Man's and Damian Marley's Jamaican dancehall grooves. But it's the wafting, electronica-infused flourishes of Beth Orton's gorgeous "Daybreaker," Zero 7's R&B-tinged "Destiny," and the moody atmospherics of Doves' "Firesuite" that best catch the intoxicating appeal of a cool, cresting wave. --Jerry McCulley

"I got this the 1st day it came out. I was soo excited about the movie so I was all fanatic about it! When I heard it, it was OFF THE HOOK! I was amazed at how good it was!1. Lenny Kravitz - If I Could Fall In Love (5/5)
This song was the title song off the album. It is soo good. It totally fits the movie. If you like any kind of rock, you'll like this. Good vocals. Hella good beat.2. N.E.R.D. - Rock star (Jason Nevins Remix Edit) (5.5/5)
I thought this song was better than the original! It has a techno vibe to it. It was played in the party scene of the movie. This is a song you can definitely dance to. Best dance song on the album. Good vocals. Awesome beat.3. Beenie Man - Party Hard (4.5/5)
This song has a good beat. Good vocals and gets you in the dancey-ish mood. Awesome for parties.4. Blestination - Cruel Summer (Blestination Mix) (5.5/5)
One of my favorite songs off the album! This song makes you wanna get up and dance like you never danced before! It has rap verses and the chorus is the song. It's soo good. If you've seen the trailer for Blue Crush, you should hear this song. Good vocals. Awesome beat.5. Chicken - Big Love (4/5)
This is a slower song from the first few. But it's still good. The vocals are alright. But the beat is good.6. Beth Orton - Daybreaker (4.5/5)
A slow, freaky sounding song. It's awesome though. The beginning might {scare} you a bit when she starts singing, but the song is awesome. Good vocals and good rhythm.7.Nikka Costa - Everybody Got Their Something (5.5/5)
To tell you the truth, I hated Nikka Costa before I heard this song. I thought she was annoying, but after I heard this song, I was like "Maybe I should give her another listen." So I did, and I actually really like her music. This song is my favorite song from the album. Something you can dance too. Not too fast, but not too slow. Awesome vocals, great beat. Good message too.8. Playgroup - Front 2 Back (Fatboy Slim Remix) (4/5)
This song is good. Something you can sing and dance to. Cool vocals, awesome beat.9. Damian Marley - And Be Loved (4/5)
This song is something you can dance to. Not my favorite but I still like it. Puts you in the summer feeling. Good beat. Vocals are alright.10. Zero 7 - Destiny (5.5/5)
This song is the best slow song on this album. If you've heard the Roswell album, this song is also on there. It's very soothing and relaxing. Something to relax you while you lay by your swimming pool, getting a tan or something. Awesome vocals. Very very nice rhythm and beat. 11. Doves - Firesuite (5/5)
This song is the instrumental one of the album. Soft rock. Awesome beat and very good rhythm. It's a song you can relax to you while you're getting your tan on. Soft, but soothing vocals. Not very much though. But it's still amazing. Nice work by the Doves. So you see, this is this summer's BEST ALBUM. It's definitely essential to all the CD collectors and music lovers out there. You've got your mix of dance, soft-rock, and rock right on this album. You should go watch the movie too! They are both essential to every summer lover. Get this album! It is a must-have! I'm sad I couldn't rate it any higher than a 5 or I would. This is the best summer soundtrack yet. If you love this movie, you'll love this. If you didn't, the music is still good."
Great Soundtrack

"The trailer of "Blue Crush" uses Blestenation's mix of "Cruel Summer." The first few seconds of one of the trailers shows surfers riding the waves to the song. If people are put off by any preconceptions of the soundtrack ("Oh, man, don't tell me -- Beach Boys songs!"), they might be pleasantly surprised by the mix here. The music for "Blue Crush" is eclectic and, if surf music's not your thing, there are other favorable tracks on this album. The "star" song seems to be Lenny Kravitz's "If I Could Fall In Love," a loud and catchy rock song, but I found many of the unknown-to-me musicians to be equally deserving, if not more, of the single. N.E.R.D.'s "Rock Star" appears as a remix, improving a slow, monotonous track to an upbeat techno / dance song. Starting off the reggae theme is Beenie Man's "Party Hard," which segues midway to more of a typical R&B piece, suitable mid-tempo play for a party. The aforementioned Blestenation mix of "Cruel Summer" is a perfect party or workout track, the most energetic and radio-friendly song of the collection. Chicken, whoever they are, are sure to find fame if they continue with songs like "Big Love," one of the best tracks on the soundtrack. With a contagious reggae beat and sexy male vocals, this song sets the summer beat. Next comes the ethereal Beth Orton, who is claiming fame for her Dido-esque vocals. "Daybreaker" may seem out of place at first, but its soul-baring and whimsical lyrics make this an interesting addition. Playgroup's "Front 2 Back" is a bouncy dance track, which is somewhat similar to "Party Hard." The film opens with the main character, Anne-Marie, waking up to Damian Marley's "And Be Loved," a cover of a Marley reggae song; the song is repeated later in the film for good reason -- it's a classic, and this version does it justice. Zero 7's "Destiny," a slow trip hop song reminiscent of the Sneaker Pimps or Portishead, and The Doves' Zen-like and instrumental (e.g., surf guitars) "Firesuite" end the album on a soft and chill out note.In general, this is a surprisingly complete and apt album for the summer. Like reggae, pop, dance, rock, rap, or techno? They are all here in one form or another. Even if the film doesn't appeal to you, the soundtrack, featuring some talented unknowns, will have you in summer vacay vibe long after the temperature has dropped."
Not bad!

"I recently bought this CD for a couple of songs in the movie that I really liked. I was very disappointed to find that one in particular was not included in this soundtrack (POD's "Youth of the Nation")Overall, it is a great mix of artists and songs. While it is a a soundtrack for a surfing movie, it is a far cry from the old Beach Boys or Jan & Dean genre.Nice job!"
