CD Reviews

Great second cd
04/01/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"in this follow-up to his first cd, thomas anderson delivers more angry young grad student music. his style is still sparse but fuller with some nice layering of guitars. lyrically, he is stronger, as well. in all, this is a great cd for traveling cross-country at night, particularly listening to "land of enchantment." all of anderson's lyrics/stories are provocative and evoke memories of past experiences and relationships. who among you hasn't known a "larissa" or a "barbara allen," at least periphally? several songs have a great frantic electric guitar quality delivered with a cranked up fender strat, e.g., "whatever happened to nash the slash." in addition to great lyrics and nice guitar work (simple maybe, but nice, and it fits musically), i think what i like about thomas anderson is the nature of his vocals, which reminds me in a way of the quavering voice of neil young. thomas finds the notes easier, though. its a nice contrast to his louder songs, and it is refreshing to let a thoughtful story, delivered musically, be the force rather than a screaming frontman. its a great hook to make a person listen. thomas anderson's work is highly recommended for those who follow singer-songwriters/poets."
