CD Reviews

Hawkwind - 'Hawklords Live' (Griffin)
Mike Reed | USA | 11/05/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"One thing I've always got a charge out of is the way that bands SOMETIMES briefly change their name.In this case,it's Hawkwind to Hawklords;I liked it even MORE so on 'Dawn Of Hawkwind'(see my review on that CD)when they were once the Hawkwind Zoo.ENOUGH!!Hawkwind IS HAWKWIND!!'Hawklords Live' is a decent six song set from a 1978 gig,a time when the band did a U.S. tour, but from what I heard, they usually played in small clubs, vacated skating arena(s) and just about any dive that would have them.Apparently,Dave Brock and frontman(1976-78)Bob Calvert were the only two HW members that survived the numerous line-up changes at the point of when this record was cut.Overall,it's got a good production intact. The best two tracks are the hard-hitting version of "Death Trap" and "Spirit Of The Age".A decent title of the group's extentive repertoire, but more 'space pop' than space rock."
ESSENTIAL HAWKWIND-AMONGST THEIR BEST!!!

"This disc is amazing for several reasons. The first being that the overall sound quality and performances are amazing to say the least. HAWKLORDS-Live ranks amongst the best sounding live material of Hawkwind's catologue. On a scale of 1-10(10 being SPACE RITUAL or maybe 1999 PARTY) this recording is a 9.5!!! Excellent. Now for the actual performances. This recording forever proves just how powerful(nearly PUNK sounding!!!) the short-lived(they only lasted through 1978, approx.) HAWKLORDS line-up could be. Robert Calvert is in top form and one could easily argue that the version of "Death Trap" on HAWKLORDS-Live is the most powerful version(of this song) of all-time, featuring a jaw-dropping middle part in which the whole band comes to a crashing halt because of what Calvert calls a "power failure". When the band kicks back into "Death Trap" after the pause, Calvert is nearly hysterical and one can only shake one's head at the sheer brilliance. "25 Years", "High Rise", and "Spirit of the Age" are all also amongst the best versions ever recorded live by the band, and the version of "Sonic Attack" is rivaled only by the version on SPACE RITUAL(1973) or some bootleg versions. The version of "Over the Top" seems like it is from a different show(actually from the SONIC ASSASSINS-era) although I'm not sure. Overall, HAWKLORDS-Live is both an amazing historical document of the brief but classic HAWKLORDS line-up and ALSO, simply legendary space-rock and a good starting point for future HAWKWIND travellers. So shell out the $20-30(in a year or two the price will have doubled unless this disc is reissued!!!)and experience some quintessential space rock from the greatest band to listen to when you're stoned or on acid of all-time!!! BUY IT NOW, get buzzed, crank it up, and take off!!!! You'll never want to come back down."
Do Not Buy this Version

"Do not buy the 1992 version of this Hawklords gig. Atomhenge have done a wonderful job at remixing, remastering, redesigning, and adding additional tracks to this album; and the new 2009 version is superior in every way.
