Synopsis

Shimmering and enveloping, the so-called dream-pop proffered by this languid British band is the aural equivalent of a sauna: relaxing, comforting--and, if you're not careful, a little bit dangerous to bask in for too long. While not entirely dissimilar to the higher-profile Cocteau Twins, this quintet used a decidedly more guitar-driven engine to buoy the siren-song vocals of frontwoman Rachel Goswell. With three guitars draped in sheets of reverb, songs like "Spanish Air" and "Catch the Breeze" retain a rock edge, even as they drift towards pure ambience. Leaders Goswell and Neil Halstead went on to form Mojave 3 after Slowdive's breakup. --David Sprague

"I am married to ex Bass player Nick Chaplin. I think this was the 2nd best cd they did. My favourite is Souvalaki. The others were pants. If anyone is interested, both Nick and Christian ( ex guitarist) can be contacted on nick.chaplin@sagetetra.com or christian.savill@sagetetra.com"

"You know when you hear a song for the first time and it is so good it gives you chills? This whole album is like that. And it's not just the first time you get this reaction. I have listened to it over a million times (give or take a few hundred) and it still has the same effect. This album is pure heaven . . ."
Simply gorgeous.

"I am one of those people for whom music marks memories... and Slowdive, along with Ride, Catherine Wheel, Kitchens of Distinction, My Bloody Valentine, and many other bands of the so-called "shoegazer" genre transport me back to a time in my youth when I gazed at my own shoes until they seemed to bleed together... all the same, it's introspective, gorgeous, and borders on the kind of emotional perfection that still moves me to tears."
