CD Reviews

A good introduction

"Shirley Bassey is fabulous, but while this CD offers a sufficient introduction to her work it doesn't provide the best examples. Never, Never, Never and Big Spender are, as always, gorgeous. If you're not already a fan, check her out with the Propellerheads on History Repeating (that's the song from the Jaguar commercial)"

"Glamour, Glitz the Drama; everything is included in this little collection. The Album kicks off with:
«Goldfinger» the song Shirley recorded for the James Bond film, it gave her a million-selling record back in 1964.
«Never, Never, Never» or «Grande Grande Grande» was a Smash Hit for Shirley in 1973.
«Something» was the title track of Shirley's 1970 album, another hit around the world.
"Let There Be Love» another touchy track, given the Bassey treat.
«Diamonds Are Forever» Shirley's 2nd James Bond recording that reached the Top 40 in 1972.
«Big Spender» a naughty Show-Stoppper from the movie `Sweet Charity' starring Shirley MacLaine.
«No Regrets» is the English version of Piaf's «Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien».
«As Long As He Needs Me» from the hit musical Oliver! This song reached number 2 in the early 60's & spent a total of 30 weeks in the Top 50.
«My Special Dream» Shirley's rendition of the popular song is dynamic and unforgettable.
«The Look Of Love» a nice way to close the album, a moving classic & favourite Shirley's stage act over the years."

"Until I purchased this CD, I didn't realize what a splendid singer Shirley Bassey is.  I'd heard a Bassey track here and there, but maybe I wasn't listening.  It might not be to the singer's advantage that her biggest hit is "Goldfinger," a tacked-together group of musical phrases unconvincingly masquerading as a song.  Certainly, the tune's bad aural aftertaste could dissuade some listeners from seeking out more Shirley, and that would be a very bad thing.  "Goldfinger" is here, of course, but the remaining titles are better than "Gold," even the other Bond-music waste of time, "Diamonds are Forever."  Best track, to my ears, is "Never, Never, Never," a piece of fluff transformed into classic pop via Bassey's emotional and musical investments.  I have nothing to offer in regard to "Something," as I've heard this title hundreds of times, and my ears have become immune to it.  I recall that it has a nice melody.  There are ten tracks on this budget collection--the magic number, ten.  Always ten!  Why is that?"
