Flores "comeback" LP provides some excellent moments
hyperbolium | Earth, USA | 09/14/2000
(3 out of 5 stars)

"From the sketchy details in the liner notes, this was something of a comeback disc for Flores. Apparently she broke her wrist in late '94, and fought her way back through physical therapy to play the guitar again. Of course, even with a non-functioning wrist, Flores still has a voice that could carry a record. Like her previous solo outings, this is a hit-and-miss affair, matching some terrific contemporary country and country-rock sides with just-passable sides.Ostensibly a rockabilly disc, the performances don't usually reach the incendiary heights that one tends to associate with the genre. Not to suggest there's no punch on this record - there certainly is. Lead guitarist T.K. Smith and the percussion section (bassist Russell Scott, drummer Donald Lindley and pianist John Herron) do their share of swinging. But it's mostly a more subdued, friendly sort of rock 'n' roll than the savage rawness one often thinks of from rockabilly's original period. Some of the finer moments come from Flores' pairing with rockabilly legend Janis Martin ("The Female Elvis"). Dueting on two songs from Martin's late 50's catalog ("Blues Keep Callin'" and "Hard Times"), the match between Flores voice with the deeper, more mature sound of Martin works perfectly. In addition to Martin, Flores also duets on a pair of tracks with another female legend, Wanda Jackson. Although Jackson's turn don't seem to have quite the fire of Martin's, it's still great to hear her again."

Even Cowgirls Get The Blues!

"Ok, so I heard of Rosie through Billy poores' somewhat biased "Rockabilly: A 40 Year Journey" Book, and he pretty much slammed Rosie as a Poser. Well, I happened to see her live the other night, based on reading about her in that book, and I hafta say, his head's up his rockabilly butt on this one. Rosie is the real thang! And this here album, which I bought off amazon due to the amazing show I saw Rosie play, is a CLASSIC. Anyone interested in Country or Rockabilly needs to get this. it's fantastic. Buy it! That's all I gotta say!"
