CD Reviews

Patterson Covers Todd!!
Laurence M. Cavanaugh | Phoenix, AZ USA | 07/20/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Patterson Hood has been pretty prolific as an artist and producer the last couple of years. His productions of Bettye Lavette and Booker T are nothing short of masterpieces, the Drive By Truckers releases (one studio, one live) are excellent, and the new solo CD lives up to the hype as well.

Like "Brighter Than Creation's Dark," this is an album meant to be listened to on vinyl, so order the vinyl version (with three bonus trax!) and break out your turntable!

And for me, there's an extra bonus-a cover of Todd Rundgren's "The Range War!" Todd is only my favorite artist of all time!

Recommended for Southern Rock fans and essential for Drive By Trucker fans."
Murdering Oscar a winner

"Patterson Hood's new solo album is very impressive. It comes out at a perfect time too. This and the Drive-By Truckers odds and ends album which just came out should tide us over until the next DBT album comes out. Even though there are contributions from other DBT members here, you definitely notice who the backbone of that band is. Patterson rounded up some great songs that he wrote (except Todd Rundgren's "Range War") and put them all together into a fine collection. From the rocking title track to the piano-driven "Pride of the Yankees" to the excellent geek-rocking "I Understand Now" to the slow, brooding number "Belvedere", 'tis a very fun album to listen to. My favorite track right now is "Heavy and Hanging". The prevalent thumping tempo of this rocker is irresistible. Any DBT fan who doesn't have this album yet, should go out and take care of that problem. Highly recommeded."

"Patterson Hood is frontman for the Drive-By Truckers and strikes out on his own for his second solo album. The closest comparison I can make To P Hood is the first Neil Young and Crazy Horse album. Does not fit everyone's tastes, but he comes up with some catchy melodies and always creates interseting lyrics. Check it out if you are a fan of Neil Young or the DBT."
