Synopsis

One thing is for certain: at least standup persona Neil Hamburger's take on X-rated comedy has a longer shelf life than most albums of its ilk. Perhaps that's because Raw Hamburger, like all Neil Hamburger projects, is conceptual. The jokes are intentionally bad, his audience is a fickle lot, and Hamburger--despite a reportedly grueling tour schedule--isn't a comedian you're likely to see at the local comedy club anytime soon. On Raw Hamburger, jokes about Hamburger's ex-wife, the IRS, blockbuster movies, and dirty diapers are interspersed with plenty of cursing and audience interplay. There aren't a lot of funny jokes here, but taken as a whole, it's as comical as standup gets. The risqué ditty "She Sits Among the Cabbages and Peas," a rare chance to hear Hamburger singing, is an added bonus. --Jason Verlinde

CD Reviews

Absolute Genius

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Although some may not grasp the joke of "Raw Hamburger," for those who do, it is a masterpiece of comedy. Neil Hamburger is the worst comedian of all time, and he is at his worst on "Raw." Tracks like "Freebasing," "Beaver," and "Dirty Diapers" showcase Neil's talent for baiting the audience with random obscenities and "observations" on life in America. Pick up this record, you'll laugh like crazy while feeling sorry for the performer's complete lack of a sense of humor at the same time."
His jokes are not "intentionally bad."

"Neil Hamburger just wants to entertain. Why must you people insist on viewing him as a joke? His cutting social commentary on this album rivals the work of Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks, both of whom were as underappreciated in their time by the humorless as Neil seems to be in his. That is why I can't wait until he is "dead" so that people will appreciate what he has to say."

"I think it is terrible the way everyone criticizes the work of Neil Hamburger. You need to find a new way to criticize it. Mmmmmmm....this is the part of the review where I like to praise the good things about Neil Hamburger. Its good the way he is always working and looking for INDUSTRY TRADE SHOW or CASINO bookings. He needs the big bucks those venues bring in...and the exposure. He has an ex-wife who is now with a dentist who is draining him dry. He even had to hide in Australia to flee her lawyers and keeps his personal possessions in a locker in LA. Neil is happy to do Pizza Parlors or any venue where they throw up a stage. Darn, he even did a show in Malasia and none of the 20 people in the audience spoke English! Buy his album! Book him for your special event! His humor will make your sides ache from laughter!! Performing is the man's destiny!! Help him, for the love of all that is decent!! Buy all of his albums...buy two and put one away in storage to sell in the BIG UPCOMING DEPRESSION!!!"
