CD Reviews

Fresh approach to Americana

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I just picked up Kevin Welch's new CD `Millionaire'. I particularly like the mellow title track, "Blanket of Snow", and his cover of Van Morrison's "Queen of the Slipstream". "Killing Myself" first caught my attention on the radio with its bluesy dobro work, and the muted trumpets are a nice rare touch on an Americana record. The album has a good mix of ballads and tight rockers. The Danes provide a powerful backing on the rockers "Choose To Believe", "I Can Sure Love You", and John Hadley's "Long Cold Train", and a gentle touch on tracks like "The Sun King and the Winter Moon" with it's prominent mandolin playing. The arrangements are very tasteful, while still cutting loose with some searing guitar work on "Choose To Believe" and the confident horn/guitar driven "I Can Sure Love You". I would highly recommend this to any fan of singer-songwriter and Americana genres."
