Energetic performances of Strauss family staples

"The liner notes emphasize that, indeed, the music of one's homeland does not necessarily flow in one's veins. While Austrian by birth, it took von Karajan some time to develop a feel for the Strauss family idiom; indeed, the notes say that his earlier attempts (in the late 1940's) produced recordings that were panned as overly-serious and stiff.Never having heard any of those older discs, I can't give a before and after assessment of von Karajan's interpretations. This recording, nonetheless, is quite good. There's dash and volume where appropriate, as well as a melancholy undercurrent where that belongs as well. So, you have a conductor who's finally hit his stride with this type of music, and playing a few lesser-heard pieces as well. Go for it, Strauss fans."
