Synopsis

Jeb Loy Nichols brings an organic warmth to his down-home fusion of retro soul grooves that call to mind Al Green and Bobby Womack and country-folk arrangements (guitars that sound like dulcimers or mandolins). Though some hear a vocal resemblance to James Taylor in Nichols's quavery tenor, he also recalls the Band at their most liltingly melodic and John Hiatt without the angst. This release sets the title's mood with some comparatively slight, wispy fare (the tone and textures of "Letter to an Angel" and "Better Than Beautiful" leave more of an imprint than the songs) before progressing to more substantial material. With the harmony-laden balladry of "Heaven Help Me," the solo "Mostly Bittersweet," and the spare transcendence of "Not the Only Man," Nichols finds a perfect marriage of sound and sense. --Don McLeese

CD Reviews

Good, relaxing music...

"I've been in search for music like Jeb's for quite a while. This first album was my first to buy of his and I was blown away. The album is somewhat simplistic in contemporary jazz but it all comes together to give a unique sound, jeb's vocals being the icing on the cake. Very smooth, smart lyrics and groove. I highly recommend his music."
I LOVE this guy!!

"Both this album and 'Just What Time It Is' are awesome. I confess that it wasn't love at first earfull with JLNichols, but it sure is now. He hits some magical combination of voice and lyric and rhythm and instrumental that is everything I want in my music: poetic without being sappy, beautifully understated, unpretentious - REAL. He hits me like no artist has for a long time. If Letter to an Angel doesn't make you sway and smile (in that bittersweet sort of way), just end it all now. 'Hold me Strong': amazing! And if 'Not the Only Man' doesn't move you... then I guess you have already ended it! If I knew where to send a letter to THIS angel (Jeb Loy), I would tell him myself."
