CD Reviews

Astonishing value for old school country and western
B. Marshall | Mirboo North, Victoria | 04/14/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I bought this because the picture of the back cover seemed to indicate each cd in this 10cd box set had seven tracks on it. I thought "only seven tracks per CD - how bent is that?" Still, seventy tracks for $19 is seriously good value. I've just received this box set and found there are actually twenty tracks on each cd - each cd featuring popular country and western performers from the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's. Two hundred tracks for under $20! Of the likes of Roy Acuff, Gene Autrey, Spade Cooley, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Carter Family, Bob Wills, and, as they say, many more. If you dig this genre, or you want to explore American music, you cannot go wrong. Grab this sucker before the not-available sign comes on. Yeehaw!"
Not perfect, but well worth the (amazing) price

(4 out of 5 stars)

"In general, the Membran Document series does a great, if not always excellent, job of assembling enormous quantities of classic recordings in unbelievably low priced 10 disc sets. "Country and Western" is no exception. The scope covered here is truly remarkable, with the earliest recordings not C&W at all, but old-timey folk. If you've never heard Buell Kazee, this is almost worth the price for the amazing "Butcher's Boy" alone. And the quality of selections remains high throughout the decades. In short, these are some of the greatest recordings of folk and country music ever made. The quality of the remastering is, unfortunately, somewhat uneven. Many sound really good, but some have obviously been subjected to some "CEDAR"-like noise reduction algorithm. The result is a hollow, digital sound that is infinitely worse than whatever surface noise was eliminated. Too bad, but not enough to keep this vast package from being your best buy when it comes to amassing a terrific library of traditional country with a single purchase."
