Synopsis

Album Description
Catherine Russell is that rarest of entities - an honest-to-goodness, genuine jazz singer. In a field where any vocalist who attempts the classic canon is granted that sobriquet as a matter of course, she stands out like a diamond among rhinestones. Ms. Russell?s voice is full-blown femininity incarnate, a dusky, stalwart and soulful instrument that radiates interpretive power yet remains touchingly vulnerable. Her phrasing is pristine and miraculously free of the slithery hailstorms of notes so commonly employed as camouflage by lesser talents. She launches fearlessly into each tune straight from the "and-one," getting inside the melody and capturing every emotion -- and the lady can swing! Whether she?s shimmying amid a barrel-house stomper, channeling fifties R&B, dragging her weary heart through a torchy juke-house number or kicking up her heels honky-tonk style, the lady can stand comparison with her greatest forebears.

CD Reviews

Don't miss it....
Open Ears | NYC, NY | 04/14/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Catherine Russell has the all too rare ability to cut across a variety of song styles in a single recording and make them all sound cohesive, organic, smart and full of connected feelings. This disc has echos of everything from gospel to jump to blues and back through Bob Wills for good measure, yet it all makes sense. To my ears its her Sam cooke allusions that work most transcendently: "Put Me Down Easy" is pure pleasure and simple moving artistry. A great talent finally stepping out front."
A Great Jazz Singer!

"A wonderful album. There is a great variety of styles on this album, and Catherine Russell shines at every moment. The mood varies as well, and Ms. Russell is equally adept at singing torch songs, the blues, and funnier numbers - don't miss "My Man's An Undertaker, and He's Got A Coffin Just Your Size".

Get this album - you won't be disappointed.

"I saw Catherine Russell at the Lotus Festival in Bloomington and immediately came home and purchased the CD at Amazon. Loved the performance and love the CD. She can do it all. Jazz, Blues, Folk, Pop. Her cover of Put Me Down Easy is the best!"
