Basic NYC psychedelic garage rock

"The BLUES MAGOOS were some creative young people from the NYC area, that had a nice run of 3 albums, with some songs getting stuck in NUGGETS, and other compilations. (In particular, Psychedelic Lollipop's "TOBACCO ROAD".) Their sound, with heavey organ, was not far from what you might expect from "Vanilla Fudge", except that they wrote all their own material. This is their third album, and a fun piece of musical history, from beginning to end. I was 20, and in college back in the 80s, when my cousin gave me her copy. I threw on headphones, because the production values rely on bouncing sounds left to right channel, and smoked a bit, to get the full effect. Many of the songs, have lots of very ACIDIC overdubs, like the freaky CHICKEN WIRE LADY, some have super lyrics, as in "I CAN HEAR THE GRASS GROW". But, my favorite track, was a little piece on side two of the LP, "SUBLIMINAL SONIC LAXATIVE". I was pretty out of it, when this "Song" came on. It's nothing but 60 seconds of a 60 hertz hum. (Just a low drone.) However, at the end of the LP track, it skipped, and I didn't know it. I sat there listening to a low HUM for about 5 to 6 minutes, totally BLOWN AWAY by the minimalism, the fluxus influences, the mystical zen koan of a single tone stretched to infinity. But, I did catch on, and realized the LP was skipping. ITS SO SAD, that in the age of CDs, you can't have experiences like that. (Unless you buy the CD, program it to repeat the SUPLIMINAL SONIC LAXITIVE song 5-6 times, and invite your friends for some minimalistic freakouts of your own.) What I'm getting at, is that the album is a TRIP, with plenty of surprises, and nifty production tricks. It's not the Velvet Underground, but it sure beats VANILLA FUDGE, or IRON BUTTERFLY. It would have been interesting to hear where this band would have gone from here. If you like this music, or this band, you will definately enjoy the CD. PEACE AND LOVE MY GROOVY FRIENDS."

"I have been a Blues Magoos fan for some time now, and have their first 2 albums. I couldnt find their 3rd album (Basic) anywhere, then i finally got a hold of it. Its a great album! All of the songs are good. The bonus tracks are kind of worthless, but besides that this album is a must for any Blues Magoos fans!"
