Synopsis

Album Description
Only a handful of musicians can lay claim to a musical moment-be it a song, a killer guitar solo, or a wailing vocal-that will be forever etched in the memories of music fans. Bill Kirchen had a moment like that: his guitar work on the Commander Cody classic "Hot Rod Lincoln"-but Kirchen's career has been much more than just that one song. It has spanned over 30 years and also includes (in addition to his 10-year stint with Cody) performances with artists such as Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, and Danny Gatton. Bill Kirchen has come to be revered as the dean of roots music guitarists. He continues to tour actively in many U.S. markets.

CD Reviews

This is a Great CD

And I'll say it again - This Is a Great CD. I saw Bill Kirchen play last weekend at a little bar in St. Louis, and talked with him a while between sets. He is totally gracious and genuine. He was selling some of his CDs, and after he asked which of his songs I liked best, recommended this one. Well, he nailed it.

I believe this CD, while not a "greatest hits" CD, is a compilation of some of his truck drivin'-rockabilly-rock and roll type songs. And does it rock. Bill Kirchen, who was playing a tan Telecaster that looked 40 years old, is just a great guitarist. The CD consists of oldies (LOOKIN' AT THE WORLD THROUGH A WINDSHIELD, among others) and Kirchen's own material (for example WOMB TO THE TOMB and TRUCK STOP AT THE END OF THE WORLD). TRUCK STOP is one of the best and funniest songs I've ever heard, and features strongly what is best about the CD - Bill Kirchen. His twangy guitar is reminiscent of old Buck Owens records, and TRUCK STOP clearly owes a large debt to Dave Dudley's SIX DAYS ON THE ROAD, but it pays that debt off early and takes off into areas Dave and Buck never entered.

The music, the lyrics, the singing, the guitar playing are all just wonderful. If twang is your thang, you will love KING OF DIESELBILLY like I do.

Did I mention before that this is a great CD?"
