Synopsis

Album Description
Johnny was born in New York and raised in Baton Rouge, but Memphis has always held a special place in his heart; in fact, `Memphis' was the title of his first hit back in 1964! And on this 1998 album, Johnny taps into that time-honored Memphis blues tradition for a great set of songs whose relaxed, shuffling groove and funky horn charts will stay with you for a good long time. Includes `Down at the House of Blues'; `Chicago Bound'; `Closer to You'; `Joker in the Wind'; `Uphill Peace of Mind'; `Last Train to Memphis'; `Don't Let the Rain Come Down'; `Treat a Dog; Rollin' Stone'; `Can't Help Myself'; `Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye'; `Gypsy Wind', and `Blue Suede Blues (Tribute to Carl Perkins)'. Don't miss this train!

People want this album as soon as they hear it! Johnny has put it all to gether in a bluesy funky CD. Tributes to Elvis and Carl Perkins, blues tunes, love tunes! "THIS IS THE MOST SURPRISING CD I'VE HEARD IN TWO DECADES!!! Rivers runs the gauntlet from rocker to bluesman, to lover, to hurting friend. Do not miss his tribute to his friend of thirty years - Carl Perkins - author of Blue Suede Shoes and his tribute to Elvis.

This is a must have if you like music.

Joker In The Wind, Chicago Bound, Blue Suede Blues. The whole CD is just Awesome. It's always in my player. You can listen to it all day. If we were allowed on Cd each - THIS WOULD BE MINE!

Enjoy

"Welcome back Johnny Rivers! He sounds as fresh and sweet as he did in 1964 when his first "Memphis" was released, and I want to endorse what another reviewer said, that this music is not just good, but also satisfying. Focusing almost exclusively on blues, this sounds in many respects like a Robert Cray effort, horns and all, but less guitar-focused. Johnny's voice is like a long lost friend (to those who knew him when), and none the worse for wear. The songs (mostly written by Johnny) are varied and consistently interesting. Possibly the most beautiful song is the last one, "Blue Suede Blues", which is not blues, but country. It could have been sung by Mark Chesnutt or Clint Black, but Johnny delivers it perfectly. My other favorites are "Uphill Peace of Mind", "Treat a Dog" and "Can't Help Myself" (not the Four Tops song), but nearly all the songs are equally good. The two 1950s traditionals "Chicago Bound" and "Rolling Stone" also satisfy. The music fits a little too comfortably into a well-worn groove to merit 5 stars, lacking anything really innovative or compelling. It is simply darn good music, expertly performed. Keep it coming, Johnny."
