CD Reviews

This is just bad

"I'm sorry but this is just bad, hearing her voice I kept waiting for something to click, but it sounds so forced."
OK...so she's not in her twenties anymore...
Reginald D. Garrard | Camilla, GA USA | 02/08/2010

"It seems that many of the "critics" of this release expected Miss Simon to sound like she did when she recorded "You're So Vain" or "Anticipation" or even the later "Nobody Does it Better". Well, thirty years or longer have passed since those songs were released and Simon, like all of us has gotten older.

But, I think the maturity in her voice has added some depth to an artist who is already a master lyricist.

"This Kind of Love" deserved a bigger audience because it presents a legend in a way that is familiar to her longtime fans as well as refreshingly fresh for contemporary listeners.

While there have been naysayers condeming the "rap" number "People Say a Lot", I find it exceptionally well-crafted, reminiscent of some of Simon's best 70's work, playfully and skillfully blending musical genres. The song ends with an excerpt from "All About Eve" with Ann Baxter and George Sanders' "Addison DeWitt". That alone makes the song memorable.

Other highlights include the title cut, "Hola Soleil", "In My Dreams", "When We're Together", "So Many People to Love", and "They Just Want You to Be There".

Even though the album was released in '08, it's not too late to "catch up" with a woman, who nearing 65 years of age, still has many years left to tell musical stories.

And for that, we should be thankful."
