From a very young age, heather caston has been preparing to make her musical mark on the world. heather spent many years developing her voice while mastering various instruments such as the cello, clarinet, and finally picking up a guitar; which she hopes to master someday. Starting with talent shows and school choir, she moved on to singing with local bands, swiftly becoming a staple in Portlands music scene. In 2003, heather realized that the only way to expose her songs properly was to do so in solo form, expressing the true emotion that her songs evoke. In 2004, heather was appointed President of The Maine Songwriters Association (MSA); a Maine based organization whose purpose is to provide networking, performance/recognition opportunities and musical education seminars for its members. As President, heather added a number of events that have broadened the MSA as an organization. While assuming this important role, heather also spent much of 2004/2005 in the studio with Fraser Jones of Independent Audio; recording her debut record, "again". After 2 years of recording, the hard work finally paid off when Bob Ludwig of Gateway Mastering agreed to put his finishing touch on the record. The debut "again" was finally released in January of 2006. MSA member Bob McKillop recently reviewed the record (see full review below) and says, "The real star of this record is heather's voice; a many-layered, multi-textured, and sophisticated instrument that she plays with natural grace and practiced craft." heather and all that worked on the project certainly have something to be proud of. Recruiting friends and friends-of-friends to perform, engineer and even master the record, it was a very grassroots way of recording. Fellow singer/songwriter Glenn Torrico adds, "If you have a way to catch her show, make every attempt to do so. It is not an exaggeration to say that she is truly world class."

"40 Day Dream," the Motown-infused, OutKast-inspired, heavily orchestrated "Beatlesque" soul jam that opens Up from Below, serves as a pretty good litmus test for what follows. Listeners who are put off by the robe-wearing Polyphonic Spree's cultish glazed-eye self-help anthems or cringe when they hear the Mamas & the Papas' "Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon" would be advised to get off the magic bus early, as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros have crafted a love letter to Laurel Canyon and all of its quasi-mystic juju that is as infuriatingly contrived and retro as it is forward-thinking and majestic. Formed in 2007 by Ima Robot frontman Alex Ebert, the mammoth 11-piece outfit embraces "the Summer of Love" with enough period beards, fonts, and Eastern mysticism to launch a thousand "Magical Mystery Tours," but despite all of the analog equipment and peacenik grandstanding, standout tracks like "Home," "Desert Song," and the aforementioned "40 Day Dream" sweep you up in their grandeur like a patchouli tornado and dare you to take your clothes off and jump in the lake with them.

"BAcksliders as last year’s Dallas Observer Music Awards winner in the Blues category. In spite of some blues influence in their songs, one would be hard pressed to call THe BAcksliders a true blues band. With the release of You’re Welcome, it would be near impossible to regard them as blues artists.

Now that it has been established what THe BAcksliders are not, let us know state what the band is. The answer to that is quite simple: THe BAcksliders are quite possibly the best, most straight forward rock band in this town. If you’re looking for alt-rock, post-modern-rock, post-psychedelic-screamo-soul-rock, or any other overly hyphenated forms of rock, then this CD isn’t for you. There are no clever gimmicks on You’re Welcome, unless if you count great songwriting and exceptional musicianship “gimmicks”.

The album is filled with plenty of rockin’ ear candy. Songs like “Typically I Don’t Mind”, “Fat Girls”, and “Wedding Day” feature straight forward melodies that will most likely stay stuck in your head for days, if not weeks or months, on end. The songs are only half the story on You’re Welcome. It helps to have a lead singer with a soulful, passionate voice like Kim Pendleton. Whether the song is raucous and energetic (“Fat Girls”) or slow and introspective (“Pass on All Your Fears”), she manages to capture the essence of the song through her voice. Chris Bonner’s skills on guitar manage to inject plenty of life into every song. Last, but certainly not least, Taylor Young’s handy work behind the drum kit show why he is one of Dallas’ greatest treasures on percussion.

So while the blues influence may be much harder to find on their latest effort, you’ll be thanking the band for making an even stronger follow up to their debut album. So follow my advice, buy You’re Welcome, and you’re welcome for the advice. Trust me, you’ll be thanking me later."

Experimental jazz with some progressive indie-rock influences. Zs is a sextet built around a Brooklyn based trio of saxophones, guitars and drums. Very interesting as they try to stay away from what would be expected from the above.
