Title: 20th Anniversary Artist: Larry Stephenson Label: Pinecastle Original Release Date: 1/1/2010 Date: 6/22/2010 |
AMAZING! I haven't listened to much of Larry Stephenson's music, but I'm sure glad I got this one. Every tune on it is perfect. The fiddle plays the breaks just right, the banjos fill-ins and backup is flawless, and the guitar is super hot! The best tune on it is by far Muleskinner Blues, which is a killer! The last tune, Larry teams up with Marty Stuart for an all out country song. He also teams up with other singers including Del McCoury.

Title: All on a Rising Day Artist: Peter Rowan Label: Sugarhill Date: 12/15/2010 |
GET THIS CD! All the tracks are great, but a few really stand out. Freedom Walkabout is one of them. I listened to this song 4 times through before going to the next one-it was that good! The title track is also great, and so is Midnight Highway. Those are the top 3 songs on the cd. Give it a listen!

I loved this cd! This is traditional bluegrass at its best! Anyone who lives in northern Indiana, will recognize the Notre Dame march. Great cd, but it does not say who any of the musicians are.

This is a GREAT cd. A wonderful example of pure bluegrass. This is one of Alison's few real bluegrass releases, and it is great. There isn't one song that I wont listen to over and over. Best tunes in my opinion on it are # 2, 5, 6, 7. Check it out!

Peter plays with a group of bluegrass boys, and they do some of Monroe's tunes. They do such a good job at them, you can't tell a diference.

THIS IS NOT BLUEGRASS. Whoever first said that it was must be clueless on music. For those who like the Longview BG band with James King, others, DON'T GET THIS!
Second if you wish for this cd, wish for only cd and front inserts, for this cd was desgined and packaged in a slim case with no back insert

As John Hartford says on the introduction track this album is an album of memories for him. Through each tune after one break on the fiddle he tells a story about the song or about some of his pickin' friends such as the Goforths and Doug Dillard. These are all old time fiddle tunes, and for someone who likes old time music, they will just love this cd! A few of the tunes, you get to hear how they were originally played such as Dusty Miller, which sounds different than the way people play it today. This cd is like a sequel to Speed of the Old Long Bow.

Title: I'm Beginning to See the Light Artist: Martin Taylor, David Grisman, Acoustic Jazz Quar Label: Acoustic Disc Original Release Date: 6/22/1999 Date: 11/14/2012 |
Ah, an album full of old jazz standards. Anyone even remotely familiar with jazz will most likely know all of these selections. I highly recommend this album for someone just entering jazz. I was in that place...the tunes on here are great repertoire additions and are worth learning. One thing that is very helpful is that each tune is played "straight" the first time closely following a version you'd find in a fakebook. Besides the learning aspect though, this is great listening too! Everything is real laid back-all acoustic instruments, light drums & bass, and laid back tempos. The improvisation is superb!

Really good-definately Progressive Bluegrass, though. It sound very weird when Tony plays the bowed banjo. If you didn't know that it was a banjo, you never would figure it out! Best tune on the whole album in my opinion-Jeremy Reel.

This album is cool! Literally! Cool jazz master Lee Konitz is still blowing people's minds away with his massive vocabulary of jazz expressions, all of which are never intrusive in any way. This time he's with some immaculate company too. 4 geniuses on one stage. This album is an example of what happens to standards when masters only of this level get a hold of them. Lee often starts the tune out with a couple hints of the melody while playing around with it for a while, adding new ideas and expressions before finishing it and heading off into blissful solos. Brad's solos are crazy good too. Throughout the album it at times sounds as if he's a guitarist. Charlie hits some really good counterpoint to what's being established by Lee or Brad and when it's solo time, look out! And as for Paul, I don't think I've ever heard him better! Check this out! It may take a few listens to grasp, but you'll enjoy it!

WOW
This is a really good recording. Too bad this is the only guitar-only album Mark made. On here, he easily gives Rice, Crary, others a run for their money. If you only listen to one song, let it be the first-about one and a half minutes of amazing picking, as O'Connor goes into his own variation of Dixie Breakdown.

Title: Meanings of Artist: Mark O'Connor Label: Wounded Bird Records Date: 3/27/2009 |
I really enjoyed this Mark O'Connor album. This is not for people who only enjoy Mark's traditional fiddle music. All of the songs on here are a mixture of folk, jazz, new age, and rock. Mark adds an electric guitar and a synthasizer to a few tunes which gives it the rock/new age feel. He also plays the mandolin, hammered dulcimer, and bass on here besides guitar and fiddle.

What an amazing disc! I picked this up at a used cd store the other day and actually wasn't familiar with this album of John's. SOOOO darn good. Classic early guitar sounds of John with the massive reverb/echo. Versions of the songs are awesome too; for example Solid Air is completely different! The closing track "One World" might be the most powerful song on the album. Listen to this if you're a Martyn fan! You wont be disappointed!

When this album first came out, and I heard some samples of it, I didn't care for it. But a few months later, I had been watching a lot of live videos of Danny, and as really starting to like him, so I went and bought it. It is a great album! It varies in style as it goes from a kind of traditional sounding bluegrass tune to a country-rock style with an electric and steel guitar. One other thing is evident, and that is he is a John Hartford fan. I already knew this from an interview of him, but it is very evident in the songs, such as singing notes with his banjo as Hartford did, as well as singing the line "preacher man hunting for a two-by-four," which I suspect he took from Hartford's line of "precher man hunting for a two-bit whore." Every song on this album is enjoyable. Check it out!

WOW! This cd is very good! I knew the 3 traditional songs on here right off the bat (Old Guitar, Carol Co, and Sugarfoot Rag) Though the rendition of Sugarfoot Rag on here is not quite what I'm used to hearing, this version is superb, and driving as it can be. They take it from the traditional key of A to the bluegrass key of B for their own approach to it. Russell Moore really shines through on Carrol County Blues with his lead guitar work that I don't usually hear much of. These are just some highlights, but of course the entire album is great, from the very start with Old Kentucky Farmers. (which the banjo kickoff sounds surprisingly similar to "Poor Ellen Smith")

Title: Simple Pleasures Artist: Alison Brown Label: Vanguard Records Original Release Date: 10/29/1990 Date: 4/23/2009 |
As you can see from under the credits, Alison's band is basically the David Grisman Quintet, with Alison Krauss and Mike Marshall. The styles on this cd range from tune to tune. The second tune, Leaving Cottondale is a nice traditional-sounding bluegrass banjo tune, while Daytime TV is purely Dawggrass. Overall, I really enjoyed this older Alison Brown cd. Rating:9/10

Title: Sleep With One Eye Open Artist: Chris Thile, Michael Daves Label: Nonesuch Original Release Date: 1/1/2011 Date: 7/14/2012 |
This is a great album to check out for the fans of the modern style of music that Thile normally does or ones that prefer the older traditional bluegrass. The duo performs a lot of bluegrass standards in the old fashioned way of just a mandolin and guitar format, but incorporate a touch of modern styles with their solos and flourishes. Highly recommended.
