MOZART VINEGRE!
Armindo | Greece | 04/15/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Even though Mariella Devia is more famous for her Italian roles she has had a huge success in Mozart roles and even recently at the last stages of her career, with difficult Mozart concert arias.

This recital was recorded in 1998 when she started singing some heavier roles and when she was nearly 50 years old. This is not to suggest that she sounds tired but to emphasise the level of her artistry. Her glassy, vinegar voice makes Mozart arias uniquely beautiful and exciting. My favourite Mozart sopranos remain Gruberova and Popp but a little bit of Devia spice is always welcome. I wonder if she ever performed Poppoli di Tessaglia with the highest note written in opera. Anyway, the concert arias here are more or less known and it's a shame there are only a few and yet another Kleine Nachtmusik is used to fill the album.

The period sound of the orchestra is endearing but the acoustic rather dry and doesn't always compliment Devia. Nevertheless it's a lovely recital with plenty trills and juicy Devia runs."
