Synopsis

Album Description
Un respiro, Mertens' new solo album offers 10 new compositions, often very rythmical tracks composed for two pianos and two voices all performed by the composer himself. It shows Mertens' passion for the voice, not using it as an instrument but presenting the voice as a guide for the piano, always looking for pure expression only. Un respiro is Mertens' 6th solo studio album as a solo performer pianist/singer.

CD Reviews

Not bad.
Boris Joselovich | NESHER Israel | 04/22/2005
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This time W.Mertens tries to outdo himself:two pianos, three voices, whistle and percusion.Though the CD has its fine moments and is worth listening,it doesn't approach the level of his best piano and voice albums like A Man Of No Fortune...,Jeremiades,Epic That Never Was,Der Heisse Brei.If you want to taste the Mertens' music,I suggest starting with one of the above mentioned CDs,but not with Un Respiro."
Five Stars by Fifth Time Through

"In the previous review Boris states:

"Though the CD has its fine moments and is worth listening,it doesn't approach the level of his best piano and voice albums like A Man Of No Fortune...,Jeremiades,Epic That Never Was,Der Heisse Brei."

and then gives UN RESPIRO 3 Stars.

I would only add that on a scale of 1-5, the albums he mentions merit 10, 9, 8, 7 respectively, UN RESIRO is at very least a five *****.

The earlier albums were incredibly beautiful and sublime from the very first listen. UN RESPIRO grows on you.

The pianos create a highly complex yet extremely beautiful foundation for Wim to rapturously convey unconditioned emotion by voicing his own language. Wims fans will enjoy this album as well as anyone with an open mind and heart and ears to hear.

Boris, it is great to know there are other Mertens ENTHUSIAST out there.
