CD Reviews

A Few Fewer Angels, Please.
Marc Ruby? | Warren, MI USA | 04/10/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Some Wayne Gratz fan out there is going to get mad at me for this, but Soul to Soul is less satisfying for me than many of Gratz's other albums. This does NOT mean I don't like it - I've been listening to it for a month or so - but that the use of electronic backup and enhancement leave me cold. Gratz has no need for extensive chorus and echo effects - he's good enough on his own.

My solution has been to keep the dynamics low enough so that I don't hear the violins and angels, which lets me concentrate on the fine piano work on cuts like Feels Like Spring and Reflection of a Summer Rain. And very fine it is. And A Search For Certainty is superb. Gratz is one of the unheralded keyboard players of the new age genre (along with Kern) and it's a shame to see many of his albums slip out of print. He has a refined melodic style which is always pleasing. As usual, if you find the album, pick it up.

The cuts on the album are:

Arise

Quietude

Feels Like Spring

Talk to the Heavens

Reflection of a Summer Rain

Gravity

Intermission

A Peaceful Path

A Search for Certainty

Traveler

Soul to Soul

The Trill of Life"
