ROCKABILLY DON'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!
Anton Garcia Fernandez | Vigo, Spain | 04/27/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Warren Smith has always been one of my favorite singers in rockabilly music. So when I found out that Bear Family (one of those German labels that's really worth checking out when it comes to country and rockabilly) were going to release a cross-section of his best Sun recordings, I couldn't be more excited.Warren is the kind of guy who can deliver as proficiently a boppin' rockabilly lyric as he can a desperate country song about lost love and loneliness. This compilation features him at his rockabilly and country best, including such classics as "Rock'n'Roll Ruby", "So long I'm Gone", "Tell Me Who" or the outrageous "Ubangi Stomp". Also included are some rehearsal tapes he cut at 706 Union, most notably the raw country ballad "The Darkest Cloud" and a country-oriented early take on "So long I'm Gone", as well as lesser-known sides such as "I'd Rather Be Safe Than Sorry".As with all of the artists who recorded at the legendary Memphis-based Sun Studios, Warren's sessions for Sam Phillips were just like a gathering of friends who jam together. That can sure be heard here, as well as his both country and rockabilly sides. I tell you, if you're interested in rockabilly, IT DON'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!!"
