CD Reviews

Dark, evil breakcore
Chris 'raging bill' Burton | either Kent or Manchester, United Kingdom | 10/20/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"2370894 is one of Venetian Snares' lesser known and earlier releases, showcasing the dark, evil sound he was going for in his earlier days (rather than the more upbeat, drill sound and melodic sounds of his later work). Similar to Shiver In Eternal Darkness and to a lesser extent Doll Doll Doll, it comprises twisted beats, bizarre, alien sounds and creepy synths, drawing influence from IDM, noise, free jazz and avant-garde music alongside the breakcore style he is famous for. While I don't think 2370894 is on the same level as some of his best releases, it's nonetheless a very strong album and something of a hidden gem in Snares' vast discography.

The tracks seem to merge into one another, making for a flowing mesh of cacophany done Snares style. There are breaks from the weirdness though; F*ck Toronto Jungle and the short Sybian Rock (one of the few Snares' tracks with guitars in it) are aggressive drill and bass piece while British IDM Present Fanfare is more melodic. For the most part however, 2370894 is a nightmarish experiment on how bizarre and noisy something can be yet still maintain musicality and steady rhythm. It's one of his more inaccessible albums and for this reason I wouldn't recommend it to those of you not already familiar with Venetian Snares, but if you're prepared for a challenge then it's recommended. If you're a fan of Snares it's a must-have.

Also of interest is the song We Are Cesspools, a rather ugly piece that contrasts with the mostly melodic track We Are Oceans from Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits and shares a sample with it. I'm guessing this was intentional."
