Developing Vivaldi

(4 out of 5 stars)

"These 5 CDs form the first half of a 10 CD set recorded in the early '90s. The first 5 illustrate Vivaldi's development over time. I confess that the first few CDs seem to lack the confident panache and melodic inventiveness which we associate with this composer, so that I have primarily enjoyed repeat listenings to CDs 4 and 5. I strongly urge Nimbus to issue the remaining 5 CDs (Volume 2), so that we may enjoy more of the mature, confident, inventive Vivaldi. Shlomo Mintz and the Israel Chamber Orchestra perform very well, and the sound is excellent. Now please complete the project quickly, so that our full enjoyment of the more mature work of Vivaldi can be fulfilled. I do consider the first part of this project well worth owning.
