"Vivaldi's treasure trove of twenty-four concertos for cello is represented here by a luscious six, and played exquisitely on authentic instruments. The Academy of Ancient Music, with director Hogwood also at the harpsichord, brings its usual signature joie de vivre to these works, and with such a perceptive, subtle and talented cellist as Christophe Coin, this collection is a beauty. The concertos themselves, most written during the 1720s, the latter part of Vivaldi's life [1678-1741], are winning creations, replete with stunning lyricism, rhythmic verve and ceaseless invention. And with the inclusion of four minor key compositions that air the composer's frequently repressed introspective nature--- making the slow movements all the more poignant--- listening becomes a special treat. The combination of Vivaldi's splendid music, playing of the utmost sensitivity and finesse, and gorgeous recorded sound, makes this CD absolutely self-recommending.
