Synopsis

Amazon.com
Unlike the numerous smooth jazz and neo-flamenco compilations (from Narada and other labels) littering the marketplace, Viva Flamenco! features numerous accomplished guitar players who remain far truer to the genre while often experimenting with outside sounds without watering down their music. Notable names here include Gerardo Nunez, Gino D'Auri, and El Viejin. Amidst some traditional numbers (many with vocal accompaniment), some artists here also offer fresh perspectives: Rafael Riqueni integrates romantic strings into the vivacious "Mi Tiempo," Miguel de la Bastide's speedy six-string fingerwork on the edited "El Cambio" (accompanied by flute) flows with a subtle jazz undertow, while Gino D'Auri's agile fretwork on "Barrio Santiago" is accompanied by sprightly tabla playing. Not all of the cuts here are outstanding, but Viva Flamenco! offers a respectable blend of tracks for the uninitiated, particularly since much of this compilation won't fit saccharine mainstream radio formats. --Bryan Reesman

(5 out of 5 stars)

"In the mood for some flamenco? Put this on and you'll know that besides the beautiful Espanola on the cover the CD has substance. This a compilation featuring 14 different artists playing nearly a hour! An excellent choice if you're in the mood for some authentic musica Espanola. Each artist is talented beyond words and just a joy to listen to. The frenzy, passion, colors of Jerez, families rooted in gipsy traditions, rhythmic, melodic, eclectic, improvisational, spontaneous and most importantly bound by tradition music is a wonderful representation of the state of the musical genre. The greats are here, featured artists include possibly the best , Paco de Lucia, Pepe Harbichuela and a host of others hailing from diverse locals and backgrounds. The booklet gives you biographical information on each artist and what CD the songs come from. A non stop tour de force this CD is awesome and shows the true character of Flamenco with only momentary side excursions into nuevo flamenco. The vocals and castanets are authentic . The challenge for the listener is to able to distinguish the styles of each player. That said I guess I'll get many listens out of this CD. Until that day when I go to Espana and sit with a bottle of Rioja at a sidewak cafe I'll listen intently. A learning experience taught by the masters I look forward to years of listening to this CD"
