CD Reviews

Debut solo effort

"The 1998 EP Hedniskhjartad was the debut solo release by black metal visionary Vintersorg. I initially resisted picking up Vintersorg's early albums since the lyrics were sung in Swedish, but after wearing out my copies of Cosmic Genesis and Visions From the Spiral Generator I knew it was time to seek them out. I'm kicking myself for having waited so long to experience this album!

Hedniskhjartad is a bit more aggressive than Vintersorg's later albums, sounding more like his recent work with Borknagar than say, the Focusing Blur. He employs both clean and black metal vocals, both of which he excels at. The music is fast and aggressive, though laced with progressive and melodic elements. The lyrical content is anyone's guess. It's all Swedish, but given his later albums you have to assume the songs deal with nature and the cosmos.

Hedniskhjartad may not be Vintersorg's best work (I'm still partial to Cosmic Genesis), but it is an excellent debut and is absolutely worth checking out.

A premonition for many good albums to come.

"I managed to get this album later than some of Vintersorg's albums following after it, such as Till Fjalls and Odemarkens Son. This is a relatively short album, consisting of only five songs, yet they are all five full of life and possess a harsh beauty that I've only seen in the metal genre a handful of times. I definitely recommend this one from beginning to end to any Vintersorg fan and also fans of other folk metal music."
