Synopsis

Victoria's potential was such that while still a teenager he was sent from his home in Spain to study music in Rome. There he encountered an incredibly rich musical environment that included many of Europe's finest musicians, including Palestrina. Although Victoria wasn't one of the more prolific composers of his time, many of his masses and motets stand among the greatest and most beautiful masterpieces of the late Renaissance. Rather than relying on elaborate structures or unusual harmonies, Victoria mastered the smaller details of melodic shape and the use of contrasting homophonic and polyphonic textures to create and resolve tension and to set and maintain mood. Examples of these techniques abound on this award-winning recording--just listen to the intensely emotional Agnus Dei of the O Quam Gloriosum mass and the effective changes of mood in the Credo of the Ave Maris Stella mass. --David Vernier

CD Reviews

Absolutely Wonderful

"This is my favorite of all the Westminster Cathedral Choir CDs. It is the only one I know of that has earned an award, and it certainly deserves it. I have several CDs of Victoria's masses by this choir, but this one is the best! The music is just magnificent; the melodies are wonderful; the blending of voices absolutely delightful, etc etc. Listen to the samples above and you will see ..uhh, that is, hear for yourself!"
Heavenly.

""Our family plays this CD almost daily. It's a taste of heaven on earth. A surge of bliss shoots through our spine each time we play it.Victoria, the composer, could well be a member of the choir of angels in heaven. Definitely a must in any sacred music collection.""
One of a Series of Victoria CDs by Hill and the Westminsters

"Over the years, from the mid-1980s, beginning (I believe) with 'O Magnum Misterium' and 'Ascendens Christus in Altum,' David Hill and the Westminster Cathedral Choir have recorded a good number of Victoria's motets and masses. All of the performances I've heard, including this CD of 'O Quam Gloriosum' and 'Ave Maris Stella,' some of Victoria's most beloved music, are stunningly sung and recorded. The Westminster Choir's boy trebles give these performances an ethereal quality that raises these performances above the usual level. This is astonishingly beautiful music in remarkably effective performances by these forces. I would also heartily recommend the others in the series.

This is music and these are performances that people who don't ordinarily like classical music, or people who aren't particularly religious, can listen to and enjoy endlessly.

Highly recommended.
