Synopsis

Album Description
Listed as thirteenth among Verdi's stage works, Il Corsaro was actually conceived years before it was finished. By the time it was finally produced in1848, its style seemed something of a throwback, and the premiere was an unmitigated disaster. Many subsequent writers dismissed it as one of Verdi's worst operas, but this opinion has been challenged in recent years. Its numerous musical beauties outweigh any hesitations induced by its old-fashioned story, and this 1971 live performance shows it at its best.

EXCELLENT CAST IN FINE PERFORMANCE
William S. Levison | Valdosta, GA United States | 12/29/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This 1971 live performance from Frankfurt is solid in every way. Lopez-Cobos conducts with spirit and accuracy, and the sound is good (very little audience noise, except for appropriate applause). Best of all is the singing. At this early point in her career, Ricciarelli possessed a gorgeous voice, and she is exquisite. In the more dramatic of the two soprano leads, Gulin is fine. Of the two males, Bruson has the more beautiful voice, while Lamberti fills the title role with gusto. Highly recommended."
