CD Reviews

A beautiful ball!
Richard Murray | Fraser, MI USA | 10/12/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"When I stumbled onto this recording by accident, I was pleased to see two of my favorite singers--Leyla Gencer and Carlo Bergonzi. I have several recordings of UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, but this one is right up there with the best of them. Leyla Gencer seems to get the snub when compared to the likes of Leontyne Price, Caballe, Callas, or Tebaldi; but, I stand in strong defense of the remarkable Gencer! It is not fair to compare her to any other artists, because she is a great artist in her own right. She is deeply involved with the drama in this performance, secure in all of her technique, and with a range that is strong from top to bottom. Her pianissimos are elegantly placed and sustained; her lowest tones are rich and full without sounding chesty or pushed. I've heard "Teco io sto" sung many times but this Gencer/Bergonzi duo puts more passion into this performance than I've heard from any other. Bergonzi is by far one of the greatest stylists of the Verdi and bel canto operas, and here he does not disappoint in the least. The baritone does his share, too, of committed singing. If you love this opera only to hear Oscar, you will want to look elsewhere. As with all live performances there are drawbacks with some of the voice placing, but the overall recording is worth every penny you spend on this vocal gem. Buy it! You won't be sorry."
