CD Reviews

The lighter side of vsnares. Solid.

"This is an odd little blip on Venetian Snare's discography. It's remarkably light-hearted and fun, but it still features the warp-speed breaks that we come to expect from Aaron Funk.

Things start out with a hilarious mash-up of the Sesame Street classic pinball number song featuring the Pointer Sisters. If you're in the correct age group, you'll undoubtedly remember the pinball animation and the catchy funkiness of the music. It's buried under a lot of editing, but you can still make it out. This is a bit off topic, but the Zen TV DVD (Ninja Tune artists) has the actual video with some sort of remix of the song, although not nearly as crazy as this Vsnares versions.

The rest of the tracks are basically what one would expect. If you're like me and you can't get enough vsnares in your life, this is worth picking up. I might not recommend it quite as highly to casual fans because you're better off buying his major albums instead. However, its a solid EP. Not quite as good as Pink + Green, to my ears, but fun nonetheless."

"Venetian Snare's "infolepsy ep" is a digital adrenal gland vigorously crushed into an espresso and drank repeatedly: Crush, mix, drink, repeat. After numerous cycles and a resulting lack of sleep you don't feel quite right, but you don't want to stop: Crush, mix, drink. There are some strong tracks on this EP that will serve as a good introduction for those new to the snares.

Strong Track::twelve

The first song, twelve, is a savage song about, the number twelve. Sesame Street comes to mind but I hesitate to picture the animals that would inhabit this digit teaching street and the children that would be glued to this particular set. The song is almost groovy, having more detectable rhythm than a typical Venetian Snare track; a very friendly introduction to our fiendish friend Aaron Funk.

Stand-out Track::where's bill?

"Where's bill?" takes clips from the movie Kill Bill and blends them up into a high energy drink that is invigorating and even a little refreshing. Listening, left me with fragmented images of our lovely Uma in yellow biker outfit, snow on the ground, and splashes of blood everywhere; flash, flash, flash. This is Venetian Snares at his best, not easy to approach but once the taste is acquired it will become a favored snack.

"Snares' roots are in breakcore after all. Infolepsy is hardly one of his most subtle releases and those enjoying the darker more experimental side of him displayed in the likes of Winter In The Belly Of A Snake will be disappointed. In fact, even compared with some of his most aggressive work (Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits, Winnipeg Is A Frozen Sh*thole) Infolepsy has a certain raw, less refined edge to it. This would make more sense if it was one of his earliest releases but this little EP is quite recent (well, late 2004). I don't know if it was because he was in a rush to do it or because he felt like doing something more in your face and, compared to a lot of his stuff, stripped down (2004 was a very experimental year for him with Hugh Chrome Cylinder Box and Horse And Goat and much of his aggressive work is programmed very carefully with great attention to detail) but the result is a great little EP. While I'd put Winnipeg Is A Frozen Sh*thole ahead of Infolepsy if you want the best of his most gabba driven work, Infolepsy is highly recommended for those who like their electronic music aggressive and noisy whilst still presenting a degree of thoughtfulness and a variety of beats and sounds."
