Synopsis

Album Description
The Replacements were loadie geniuses, beautiful fuck ups and some of the most inspirational foul mouths in the last 30 years of rock and roll. 1-2-3-4 Go! has assembled 23 bands of the mats illegitimate sons and daughters who are in their own ways carrying on their legacy to pay tribute to a band that helped spawn them. Tributes can be tricky territories to navigate. A lot of times you're jumping in because you're a fan of the band being covered or you like some of the bands doing the covering. Most of the time you find yourself waste deep in a load of haphazardly assembled tracks that might as well be karaoke versions of the originals. Luckily this one carries off what tributes rarely do...it captures the spirits of all the bands involved including the original artist with out sacrificing the hearts of either. Long time Replacements fans who have no idea who any of these bands are will get a good sampler of whats going on in independent rock'n'roll from all over the US and Japan and fans of the bands doing the covering are going to get an amazing introduction to the songs of their new favorite band. All tracks are previously unreleased and exclusive to this release. Artwork by Cristy Road!

CD Reviews

Above average tribute record...Drag the River steals show
Randall Sound | Fredericksburg, VA United States | 10/15/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Most tributes to great bands are actually pretty horrible, for all the obvious reasons. This one is not. The covers are faithful without being carbon copies. Great songs performed by a bunch of energetic, fresh bands. Highlights are the covers by the Ergs (I'm in Trouble), Druglords of the Avenues (Favorite Thing), Tiltwheel (Skyway) and the Draft (Little Mascara). The Queers monotone cover of "Unsatisfied" is horrible, but you should have seen that coming a mile away. Right, chip?

The real gem on this record is the cover of "Portland" by Drag the River. Perfect mix of originality and respect to the 'mats version. Excellent track by one of the best bands in the country. Pay attention to this one: it's reason alone to track down this record. (Most of the other bands on this are good too, so there's no need to get WD.)

P.S. For the jaybird fans in the audience, this is NOT the 'mats tribute with the Leatherface cover of "Can't Hardly Wait.""
INCREDIBLE! and yes, Drag the River does steal the show
SUPERMAN | THE 40 WATT IN ATHENS | 12/30/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Mats were my favorite band of all-time. I had the pleasure to have seen them numerous times in all of their drunken glory. So, I was interested in hearing this album, primarily, because it was a tribute to the early Mats, the one of Bob Stinson and hard-playing. In this CD, you have primarily punk bands playing the Mats the way it ought to be played, hard! The first twelve songs were so great that I kept wanting to hit the reverse button and play each again, but couldn't because it just kept getting better and better. Great freaking album that you will not regret buying if you are a fan of the Replacements. Blotto and the Tim Version do exceptionally well on their covers. However, the crown jewel is Drag the River's version of "Portland." Dare I say that it is better than the original Mats' version?"

"Well, if you like the Replacements or indie rock, you'll like this disc. I'm surprised that the previous reviewer didn't mention the second track, by Hi Ho Six Shooter. That's my personal fave. Paul W. would be pleased - wonder if he's heard this yet?"
