Synopsis

Product Description
Do you like 'Exotica'? What is 'Tiki'? And how do the two relate to each other? Ten years after the publication of the Book Of Tiki, with which Sven Kirsten unearthed the forgotten cult of Polynesian pop and defined the Tiki figure as its protagonist, the two genres are conclusively united in this CD. Having been fortunate to have met both (and seen perform) the two foremost practitioners of Exotica music, Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman before they joined the Big Luau in the Sky, urban archeologist Kirsten is now applying his vast knowledge of Tiki culture to throw new light on the themes and concepts of Polynesian pop. By assembling a cornucopia of songs and visuals that evoke the time of Tiki, when urban paradises harbored refugees from the grey workaday in almost every metropolis in America, this compilation brings the escapist fantasies of yesterday back to today's much too real world. Far from being a dry history lesson, this collection of rare eye candy imagery and wistful soundscapes will ad a further dimension to any Tiki Bar or backyard Luau. Sven Kirsten invites you to savor this musical cocktail of exotic moods with the appropriate rum beverage in hand, and hopes that, even if tropical environs do not surround you, splendid Tiki temples may rise again in your mind's eye! Contains a 52-page booklet with beautiful colorful rare images and insightful text that complements the musical experience.

CD Reviews

Outstanding for fans of polynesia/tiki/lounge music
The Tao of Netflix | Washington, DC | 05/24/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"To preface this review, you should understand I'm an absolute junkie for all things tiki and polynesia. So while my standards for judging tiki products are somewhat reduced in light of my mania, I honestly believe this compilation will appeal to anyone who has even a slight interest in tiki. The compilation is a great set of music that is ideal for background/mood music, or for a tiki-themed party. Also, the CD comes with a nice little booklet about some historical facts about tiki, which makes this a very nice item to own. Those familiar with Kirsten will be aware of his previously-released book, which, IMHO, is the most comprehensive and authoritative source of tiki history. Great read. I know we, i.e., those participating in the interweb :) have alternate options for securing our digital needs. This is an item you should secure from the original source - with the packaging and booklet, its a great addition to your collection."
