CD Reviews

"Soundtrack" for the German Television Series
Raymond P. Lang | Ft. Walton Beach, Florida | 09/10/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"To most American listeners, the "Space Night" series is somewhat of a puzzlement. Music that is ambient and/or techno in nature, with cover art of the Space Shuttles. However, in Germany Space Night is on the same level as many cult shows on cable.

Space Night began several years ago on Bayerishcen Rundfunk's learning channel, BR-Alpha. The basic concept was to show footage taken from space by NASA, along with music from European artists such as Tosca, The Sushi Club and Aural Float. The concept turned into a very popular program despite being on late at night, usually after 23.00 European time. In addition, the music was released on CD, providing a new outlet for these artists to reach their audience.

Space Night VI continues this (now yearly) tradition, with music inspired by and designed to invoke the feeling of spaceflight. This was the first release that made it across the Atlantic to the US, and is perhaps one of the best compilations available. Artists that might be recognizable to the American listener (Thievery Corporation, Groove Armada, Chicane) are interspaced with European artists, all of whom create a lush atmosphere of drifting in darkness, the world slowly passing underneath.

If you're looking for ambient music to explore the genre, this is an excellent selection to begin with. And if you're already familiar with the television program, it's definitely worth being a part of your collection."
A MUST HAVE Ambient Compilation!

"Space Night is one of the best Ambient/Electronica compilation series I've ever heard. I rate it up there with Barramundi, Waveform or the Feed Your Head compilations. Most of the artists are played weekly on Musical Starstreams ... in America. You can order the entire Space Night series through Amazon.de, which I recommend. Just buy the whole series you won't be sorry. It makes you want to move to Germany just to experience it first hand. If you're an Electronica junkie this is for you!"
