Synopsis

Amazon.com
Jazz and Latin music are each irresistible on their own. Ritmo de la Noche combines them with a brilliance that would shame a rainbow. This collection of Latin jazz classics includes jazz men such as flutist Herbie Mann, who embraces tough Cuban rhythms on Horace Silver's "Señor Blues," from 1965, and the Fania All Stars' conga man, Ray Barretto, gliding into smooth-jazz territory with 1979's infectious "La Cuña." Astrud Gilberto brings bossa nova into the mix with the seductive "Ponteio" from 1971, featuring Stanley Turrentine playing the Stan Getz role on sax. Argentina's Gato Barbieri wields his familiar sultry tenor saxophone on the cha-cha-cha "Sweet Glenda," while perennial crossover star Carlos Santana hitches his unmistakable Bay Area barrio rock to 1973's percolating "Samba de Sausalito." The genius of the individual songs is matched by the effortless flow of the entire disc. And seminal selections like Mongo Santamaria's "Watermelon Man" from 1965 benefit from the clean and detailed remastered versions here. --Bob Tarte

Some nice things you might have missed...
vmzfla | Orlando, Fl. | 10/20/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"First of all don't expect this to be a salsa/merengue danceable type of album. Though those elements may be evident in a few of the selections! Instead it is a sit and sip your cocktail and perhaps shake in your chair a little set. The type of program you might find at your local jazz club; say on Latin night. The selections are well chosen covering alot of territory in years from 1965-2001, all nicely remastered

by 24BIT technology. There are several rare CTI(Creed Taylor)tracks from the seventies included making the low price a real bargain. The balance of material comes from the SONY/Columbia vaults. Santana, Gato Barbieri,

and Stan Getz are among the star studded cast. Jobim's inclusion of his "Stone Flower" shows his talents are beyond bossa. Everyone involved brings something of value to this "Tropicalismo" table. One minor beef I have is the absence of personel listing for each track. However, if you can find a cheap copy, buy it!"
