Album Description
Some of the best known jazz artists in L.A. have come together to pay tribute to the late bass player and composer Eric von Essen who worked with Art Farner, Bob Brookmeyer, Warne Marsh, Shorty Rodgers, Bud Shank and Jimmy Rowles, to name a few. Volume II features the same stellar lineup as Volume I including: Alex Cline, Nels Cline, Alan Broadbent, Peter Erskine, Larry Koonse, Alan Pasqua, Stacy Rowles and many others. A worthy tribute to the late composer and bassist.

CD Reviews

This ain't no smooth jazz, baby!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Relaxing music (without being insulting to your intelligence) played by solid jazz players. This is the kind of music that I always pictured would be playing in a Manhattan apartment with a view when I made it big in editing someday.... It has that feeling of resignation and reflection that seem to color much jazz music with a distinctly urban palette. Most of these musicians played with Von Essen before he passed away fairly recently and the experience colors the playing, by my assessment. The music sounds respectful, dignified, careful (as in "done with care," as opposed to a code word for "stodgy"). This isn't music to romance someone with. It's what I'd listen to if I wanted to be alone, working something out in my mind -- my gaze blank and ears letting in the sounds."
