Synopsis

Album Description
ABOUT THE ARTIST: As lead guitarist in one of the most popular bands to emerge from England in the past 15 years, Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood has evolved musically during the band's heralded career. After 3 Radiohead albums of solid rock guitar playing Greenwood progressed into the world of electronics on the band's ground breaking ambient recordings of Kid A and Amnesiac . He developed into a multi instrumentalist and visionary recording one solo album, Bodysong in 2003. Greenwood's work demonstrates and proves him to be one of the more creative and profound forces in contemporary music.ABOUT THE ALBUM: As a fervent fan of reggae music Jonny Greenwood worked with Trojan Records to compile his favorite recordings from the extensive legendary catalog. After 6 months of endless listening Jonny narrowed down his choices to 17 crucial tracks of essential reggae listening. Not a best of but a deep digging in the crates collection of rich Jamaican sounds and styles covering soul, roots and dub. The set features renowned vocalists, musicians and producers including Desmond Dekker, Lee Perry, Gregory Isaacs, Sly & Robbie, King Tubby, Scientist and many others. The set is the latest in Trojan's artist choice jukebox series following DJ Spooky, Don Letts and others.

A Strange Gift

"It's a curious world when the best Reggae release of 2007 comes via the lead guitarist of England's Alt-Rock/prog band Radiohead. Well, it does not feature a note of music from Jonny Greenwood, but is a compilation of classic reggae tracks from the Trojan records vaults. Greenwood professes to be a novice in the liner notes, but has done a good job of picking a diverse set of A+ tracks.

Highlights include several tracks from faily well known artists like Gregory Isaacs, the Heptones, Lee Perry and Desmond Dekker. But the real treasures are from some of the more obscure (at least to me) artists. First is a great 12' mix of I'M STILL IN LOVE from MARCIA AITKEN. a great pop-reggae track that melds into a dub/toaster ending that will have you hitting the repeat button endlessly. Also a great version of the R&B classic FEVER from Junior Byles and the lead track DREAD ARE THE CONTROLLER by Lival Thompson serve as highlights. Much of the material leans toward dub style production, but I'd say that everything is pretty accessible to someone interested in Jamaican music.

This is a solid collection, without a weak track that would serve as a great introduction to reggae or would serve a person well versed in the music. I've had it on constant rotation all summer."

"This album gathers some of the best oldskool reggae ballads; The Controller is guaranteed to get anyone that didn't appreciate reggae before into reggae. The songs Johnny Picked are amazing jams from Trojan Records artist tastefully put together in this collection of classics. It is the best album I have purchase all year and it really is hard to argue with Johnny Greenwood's taste. I love it!
