CD Reviews

Double Disappointment
Peter Sanderson | Doha, Qatar | 06/05/2005
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Don't be fooled by the blurb. This is a "box set" only in the sense that a cellowrapped "set" of original CDs arrives at your door in a cardboard postal "box." Well anyways, on to the music. As a fan of lounge jazz, I fell for the rave reviews and shelled out US$100. What you get here is a lot of mediocre music, most of which pumps out a pleasing background of atmospheric ambience and the occasional lively sample, but there's a serious lack of virtuosity to this stuff. This is not headphone kind of music that transfixes you and lifts you out of a humdrum day. When I load new CDs, I give tracks a star-rating so I can head straight for the gravy the moment I power up. I normally get a few 3-star tracks from a decent album. In the entire 6-CD pack of Hotel Costes, I dished out but one: Grace Jones "Libertango." Admittedly, there were a lot of other decent tracks, but anything beyond that (about half)ended up deleted. All in all, a poor performance compared to, say, "Saint Germain du Pres Cafe 3" which yields several choice pieces of music and, well, any De-Phazz album."

"I discovered Hotel Costes cds in Paris. I just loved them. I started with etage 3, then bought 1-2, then 4-5-6 and now 7.

each cd, is different, but if you listen carefully to each one of them, you'll see how the dj, stephane pompougnac, transmits his energy and feelings through his music. I also have to say that the bar in Paris is just AMAZING!!!"
I'm addicted

"All of these are amazing. I bought each compellation one by one as it was released, but a collection of all of them in one package is a treat and a treasure. In fact, I liked the music so much I went to Paris to visit Hotel Costes lounge. The place is as classy and funky as the music on the CDs. Too bad Stephane Pompougnac doesn't spin live, that would have been just over the top."
