CD Reviews

Now THIS is music !!!

"Hit Parade 1944 is a budget priced CD that gives you quite a bit to be happy about if you like this sort of music. Quite a few of these songs remain classics even today; and the sound quality is excellent. The artwork is nicely done as well.

Frank Sinatra starts out the CD with a fine interpretation of "I Couldn't Sleep A Wink Last Night." I wish they had indicated who the backup singers were; they do a good job as Frank sings this tune. The Mills Brothers also weigh in with their hit "You Always Hurt The One You Love;" this sweet melody may not go along with the sorrowful lyrics but "You Always Hurt The One You Love" is still a great ballad. "G.I. Jive" picks up the pace somewhat and I always enjoy this number. Jo Stafford sounds wonderful as she sings "Long Ago (And Far Away)," and The Merry Macs don't sound too shabby either as they perform "Mairzy Doats."

The rest of this album is nothing to sneeze at. The great Judy Garland turns out her very best as she sings "The Trolley Song;" and I like Bing Crosby's crooning as he does "Don't Fence Me In" with The Andrews Sisters--twice the treat for this song! Another highlight of this album is "I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You);" Dick Haymes sings this to perfection and Harry James conducts his orchestra very well.

Overall, Hit Parade 1944 is quite a fine installment in this CD series. People who like classic pop vocals will enjoy this over and over again!

"This CD was purchased as a Christmas gift for my aunt who was married in 1944. My uncle has been gone for 10 years, but listening to the CD brought back wonderful memories of earlier times for her. What more can you ask of a CD."
