CD Reviews

Another strong 80s 12" collection
Daniel W. Kelly | Long Island, NY United States | 10/31/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"As with most of these compilations, there are a load of repeats with just enough new hard-to-find 12" mixes that make it totally worth the purchase. Notes and track times:

CD 1

1. take on me...a-ha (4:47)

2. relax...Frankie goes to Hollywood (7:24)

3. down under...men at work (5:22) (who knew there was an extended version? Better question, WHY? This is an extended version just for the sake of it. It's choppy and messy and loses the flow of the original--and it's got heavier, clunky percussion)

4. maneater...hall & oates (5:58) (another messy 12" version. The original LP mix is better--and this version can also be found on the Hall & Oates remix CDs, which are very hot)

5. Dr. Beat...Miami Sound Machine (6:15) (somehow, this clocks in 15 seconds shorter than the version I have on other compilations)

6. I Owe You Nothing...Bros (6:20)

7. Misfit...Curiosity Killed The Cat (6:45) (AT LAST! This is the mix I have on UK vinyl 12". I've only found a different 7 minute mix on other compilations)

8. You Got It(the right stuff)...New Kids on the Block (5:36) (NOT the original 12". This is the house mix from the NKOTB "No More Games: The Remix Album" CD)

9. Walk Like an Egyptian...Bangles (5:48)

10. Love & Pride...King (6:13) (the version that begins with the acapella intro)

11. Tell It To My Heart...Taylor Dayne (5:46) (OK. At first I was furious that they used the DUB instead of the 12" vocal mix. BUT, I see the reason for this mix as a rarety on CD. The mix is a little more freestyle, but there IS vocal, including ad-lib by Taylor that is NOT on the original version of the song! Hot collectible. You can get the original 12" mix on the compilation "I Love Disco 2")

12. Girl You Know It's True...Milli Vanilli (6:29) (This is NOT the NY Subway Mix, which begins with an acapella intro, nor is it the version on the All Or Nothing Remix Album. It features a spoken intro conversation between a guy and girl)

13. Billiejean...Michael Jackson (6:22)

CD2

1. I Want Your Sex...George Michael (4:45) (Waste of space. Why not give us the FULL 13 minute 12" mix, which was split into two separate parts even on the full George Michael "Faith" CD)

2. Wishing Well...Terence Trent D'Arby (6:15) (This is not the US 12" mix, but a very hot collectible `extended' version that features vocal ad-lib not on the original released recording)

3. Heart and Soul...T'Pau (4:13) (REMIX? I think not. This is the full length LP version)

4. You Came...Kim Wilde (6:44) (This is known as "The Close Remix". The shep pettibone mix can be found on the compilation "Back to the 80s: The Long Versions 2")

5. Digging Your Scene...Blow Monkeys (6:25) (Very cool collectible. This is a different version than the original 12")

6. don't turn around...aswad (5:47) (so Ace of Base weren't the first band to record this song....)

7. Surrender...Swing Out Sister (6:39)

8. living in a box...living in a box (6:05)

9. love plus one...haircut 100 (5:37)

10. don't talk to me about love...altered images (6:57)

11. you spin me around...Dead or alive (8:00) (Yes, AGAIN. Why don't record labels realize there are at least a dozen other Dead or Alive 12" singles that need to be on CD???)

12. never gonna give you up...rick astley (5:47)

13. easy lover...phil bailey & phil Collins (5:04) (Will any label EVER put the 12" remix vinyl version on CD??? This is the LP version)"

"In addition to the great review above (or is below now).

The milli vanilli track is edited/ fades out at 6:30. The original 12inch of this runs 8:50 (available on a long OOP cd called maxi summer hits). The terence trent dárby track is the 3 coins in a fountain mix that could be found on the bonus disc with his greatest his cd. The george michael track is simply the single/album version. I personally purchased this one for the easy lover track and feld ripped as it was the ordinary album version."
