CD Reviews

Excellent album of '50s tunes
Matthew G. Sherwin | last seen screaming at Amazon customer service | 03/11/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Fabulous Fifties Classic Songs has an eclectic assortment of tunes from the `50s. Some of these are huge hits while others are great even though they weren't the most famous renditions of certain ballads. The sound is always very good and the artwork is really cool.

The track set starts off with Eddie Fisher singing "I Need You Now;" Eddie never sounded better and the guitar arrangement works wonders for this ballad. Eddie's excellent diction bolsters his performance and the brass enhances the music even more! "Round And Round" by Perry Como sounds as fresh as if he just sang it; although there is just a very small amount of surface noise. The male backup chorus enhances the natural beauty of this number; Perry was indeed one of the world's best crooners ever!

Dinah Shore performs a very fine rendition of "Love And Marriage;" and her interpretation is as good as Frank Sinatra's (well, almost)! Teresa Brewer also sounds wonderful on one of her signature songs entitled "Music Music Music." Teresa sings this much better than any other artist or group ever did; and the piano effects are wonderful on "Music Music Music."

Listen also for Johnny Mathis to perform his sublime "Misty;" Johnny sings this with a smooth ability to deliver this love ballad like the pro he was and still remains! Johnny's version of "Misty" impresses me greatly and I could never tire of hearing this fine ballad. There's even the great Kitty Kallen singing "Little Things Mean A Lot." Kitty sings this brilliantly and her delivery of this touching song really moves me and tugs at my heartstrings every time I hear it. The Four Lads also do a great job on "Standing On The Corner;" they sing so well of a guy who loves to watch the young ladies walk by as he stands on the street corner watching them.

"Oh Carol!" by Neil Sedaka has that signature Sedaka sound to it and Neil delivers this with passion, heart and soul. The guitars and the backup vocalists sound great, too. Another number on this CD that I like is by Hugo Winterhalter And His Orchestra; they perform "Canadian Sunset" to perfection. I always enjoy the music of Hugo Winterhalter And His Orchestra.

Overall, this is some fine CD! The songs and indeed all the numbers impress me and this is bound to bring back great memories for the people who first heard these tunes on the radio. I highly recommend this CD for fans of `50s music and the artists on this album. People who enjoy classic pop vocals and oldies will also want to get this!
