Amazon.com In 1970, saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Joe Zawinul, fresh from their stint with Miles Davis, created an ensemble that performed with a jazz sensibility coupled with a groundbreaking use of electronics. Known as Weather Report, their band undertook evolutionary explorations that one writer then described as "folk music of the future." By the time Weather Report disbanded in 1985, some of the brightest stars of the post-'60s era had passed through the group, including bassist Jaco Pastorius, drummer Peter Erskine, and guitarist Steve Khan. Now another Davis sideman, keyboardist Jason Miles has produced a heartfelt tribute to WR with over 20 all-star performers. With ex-Weather Reporters Victor Bailey and Omar Hakim holding it down on bass and drums, Jason Miles and company's take on WR's music comes tailor-made for smooth-jazz audiences. Take 6's vocal samplings on the hit "Birdland" and the funky "Palladium" are as snappy as the harmonies of "A Remark You Made" and "Mysterious Traveller" are impressionistic. CD ReviewsHow much do you want, nasa? charley hardman | occupied US | 04/25/2000 (1 out of 5 stars) "blast me to a planet where there aren't people who can't tell the difference between spyro gyra and weather report. some people just don't get it. i'm so bummed out after listening to this that i want to hurl. it's a disgrace on every level. this album has ZIPPO life, ZERO soul, and it's so full of the 'sophistication' which the blasphemous routinely refer to as 'smooth jazz' that it's surprising you don't get charged extra for the shipping-five pounds of garbage. arggggggghhhh! this is a cretinous disaster that should be renamed, 'mocking of the music of weather report by pedestrian musicians with no heart'.announcement: PREPROGRAMMED, ELECTRONIC LOUNGE DISCO DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH WEATHER REPORT. jaco is flipping over in his grave. who knows what those poor souls from the real 'badia' would do if they heard this. please don't let them anywhere near this horrific indicator of the unfortunate conclusion, "all is lost."nasa, slap an extra booster rocket on and get me away from the people who think this album is a celebration of anything but night soil. am i in hell? weather report didn't do anything to deserve this. leave them alone! cannonball? Even with a cast of greats, they still managed to turn some of the best fusion into schmaltz. Shouldn't there be law against this! What has happened to all the music of Weather Report on this... this.. THING! What is this - some sort of Kenny G/Michael Bolton collaboration? And Look at all the big names - The Brecker Brothers, Victor Bailey, Steve Gadd, Marcus Miller, Omar Hakim - And Birdland - WHAT'S WITH THE VOICES!!? and not to forget THE "Smoothy Feel" THAT COMES WITH THIS REMAKE OF BIRDLAND (and the rest of this album)! And what about Cannon Ball? What about that? I think SHLOOOBY is the word. And Badia?? don't even talk to me about mysterious traveller.NOW I'm sure they had their hearts in the right place, but THIS IS REALLY THE BIGGEST DOSE OF...you know... all I have to say is ARGHHH!!!!and to the guy who said the liner notes illuminate the CD - the only thing that could illuminate this cd is a box of matches!!!!...i'll be in my room if you need me" |
