Synopsis

Globalization, the ongoing and increasing international integration of markets for goods, services, labor, and capital, has many vocal opponents. But routine economic exploitation of developing nations and the universal omnipotence of Western pop culture is not the definition of "One World" that enlightened people are prepared to live with. Each of the artists appearing on this CD has demonstrated a strong sense of national identity and a heartfelt commitment to social activism. A few were also involved in choosing tracks for this compilation, which includes some previously unreleased material and suggests fifteen though-provoking alternatives to the status quo, some more radical than others. Among the talent on hand are Spanish pop star Manu Chao, Lee Scratch Perry and the Skatalites from Jamaica, Algerian singer/songwriter/gadfly Idir, the Grammy-winning and Platinum selling American superstar Moby and Femi Kuti of Nigeria, whose father (the great Fela Kuti), uncle and grandmother were all outspoken opponents of government corruption and paid dearly for it. Musically, the set is first-rate and the accompanying book is bound to inspire interesting conversations -- and perhaps even a little grassroots action. --Christina Roden

CD Reviews

Forget the Politics, Check the Music
Robert Szarka | Norwich, CT USA | 07/14/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"While the music and politics included on this compilation aren't completely unrelated, the music does stand on its own and is enjoyable regardless of one's politics. The included tracks range from merely OK to outstanding, with enough of the latter to make this CD worth a buy.

In particular, The No Smoking Orchestra's cover of "Lost in the Supermarket" is a truly fresh take on one of my favorite songs. (It's also more interesting than most of their original work.) Asian Dub Foundation & Zebda also provide an enjoyable cover of "Police on My Back", making this compilation a must-hear for fans of The Clash. Among the remainder of the tracks, there were some I enjoyed and some that I found uninteresting, but none that made me hit the skip button in disgust.

In the end, this compilation may be a poor argument against "globalization": it seems unlikely that we could enjoy a CD like this, with diverse artists from around the world, were it not for the spread of markets and technology to every corner of the globe. At the same time, in defying the homogenization that often accompanies globalization, perhaps the included artists have demonstrated in their small way that "another world is possible"."
