Synopsis

Amazon.com
A well chosen compilation of 12 songs, "Afro Latino" features artists from both sides of the Atlantic, including some based in the USA. The marriage of African and Cuban rhythm and tradition is incredibly fertile, witnessed by the many different takes on this most sensual and swinging mix from Cuba, Senegal, Angola, Cape Verde, The Congo, and even Peru. From the acoustic guitar-led Quarteto Oriente (playing in Cuba's "oriente" style) to Congo's soukous supergroup Les 4 Etoiles, the legendary Orchestra Baobab and Africando, this is a top flight introduction to the many flavors of Afro-Cuban music. Included from Putamayo's Artist label are the salsa tinged Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca and well established Congolese guitarist/songwriter Sam Mangwana, now residing in the USA. Afro-Cuban music has never been more vital, and this collection is a good place to start your explorations. --Derek Rath

CD Reviews

Awesome

"I used to own 3 CD stores and ran a recording studio and a sound company. I've listened to just about everything. I guess I just got burned out on the same ole stuff - the same recycled riffs, recyled bands, etc. When I heard this disc, it blew me away. I've tried to track down the artists on the disc and buy their cds, too. But, most of these groups don't have any releases you can buy in the states - just a couple do. Not only are the artists great. Whoever put this compilation together deserves a lot of the credit. Probably the same person who compiled Samba Bosa Nova, another Putumayo masterpiece. It's a keeper."
Feel the Rhythms in Afro-Latino music

"Welcome to the sensational music of Putamayo Artists. This album is a wonderful introduction to Afro-Cuban sounds. Combinations of 'Cubanesque' rhythms and African folk rhythms create a irresistable sound that, as the CD claims, is "Guaranteed to make you feel good!" I used to live in Miami and this music reminds me of the Cuban passion for good music. If you are not familiar with this sound, this album would make a wonderful initiation into the world of 'musica Latina'. This CD includes a booklet which explains how Cuban sounds are introduced into African culture. It also details each artist featured, which instruments played (some you've never heard), and the background of the story being told. Be prepared to get up and dance!"
A must have for a great collection of music

"If you have an ear for this genre of music, or if you are looking to get a taste, this is by far one of the most lively, fun and fantastic CDs you could get your hands on. The first song will capture your tapping feet and the guitar on Mujer Magica will mesmerize your senses. This is a must have CD."
