CD Reviews

Excellent CD!!!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"As may be evident by the title, this musical is based on Cecil B. DeMille's epic movie "The Ten Commandments," which is based on the first few chapters of Exodus. The musical sticks pretty close to the movie, and it portrays more-or-less accurately the Biblical account (with some of the same twists that the movie puts on it).

All of the singers on this CD are incredible, and the whole thing is very well-done. Whether or not you know French, I highly recommend getting it. If you understand French, so much the better. :-) I hope they release an English translation.

Since the above song list only shows the titles in French, I thought it might be helpful to translate them into English and say a little about each song.

*Je laisse à l'abandon = I Leave to Abandon*

Yokebed, Moses' mother, must place her newborn son in a basket and send him down the Nile to save him from the wrath of the Pharaoh, who has ordered all Hebrew babies killed. Bithia, Pharaoh's wife, finds the basket in the river. The two women sing a stirring duet about their love for this baby.

*Il s'appellera Moïse = His Name Will Be Moses*

Bithia names the baby Moses and decides to raise him as her own son.

*Le dilemme = The Dilemma*

Years have passed. Nefertari, future Queen of Egypt, sings about her love for Princes Moses and Ramses. She wishes she could just love both of them without having to choose one.

*A chacun son rêve = To Each His Dream*

Moses and Ramses sing about their dreams and aspirations. Moses will be the head architect, while Ramses is the heir to the throne.

*La peine maximum = The Maximum Pain*

Joshua, an Israelite slave, sings about the oppression of the slaves.

*Oh Moïse = O Moses*

Yokebed, Bithia, and Moses' biological siblings Miriam and Aaron express their feelings about Moses' flight from Egypt and their love for him.

*Il est celui que je voulais = He's the One I Wanted*

Zipporah, a Midianite woman, sings about the man of her dreams.

*Mais tu t'en vas = But You're Going Away*

In Egypt, Bithia, Nefertari and Miriam sing about how Moses is leaving on a great journey. Years later, Zipporah sings about Moses leaving Midian. Moses and Zipporah are now married.

*Laisse mon peuple s'en aller = Let My People Go*

Back in Egypt, Moses, with help from Yokebed, pleads with Pharaoh Ramses to release the Israelite slaves.

*L.I.B.R.E = F-R-E-E*

After ten plagues, Pharaoh finally allows the Israelite slaves to go free. Miriam leads the Israelites in a celebration.

*Devant la mer = Before the Sea*

The Israelites have reached the Red Sea, with the Egyptian army chasing them. Aaron sings about the road closing up before the sea.

*Mon frère = My Brother*

The Israelites have passed safely through the Red Sea on dry land, and when the Egyptian army followed them, the sea fell on them, drowning everyone but Ramses. Ramses and Moses sing about how the brotherhood they are losing.

*Les dix commandements = The Ten Commandments*

God has presented the Ten Commandments to Moses, and Moses sings about them.

*L'Envie d'aimer = The Desire to Love*

Moses sings about love."
A delight
