CD Reviews

Beautiful Music
J. A. Dispensa | Manchester, NH United States | 02/06/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This music is wonderful. It's vibrant and moving. My favorite
track is "Simple and Clean", the theme song to Kingdom Hearts.
It's one of those tunes that you don't mind getting stuck in your head. This CD single includes:
Colors
Simple and Clean (original mix)
Simple and Clean (PLANITb Remix)
Colors (Original Karaoke)"
Very Good!

"This is a great single and I'm glad I bought it. A lot of singles are less than 10 minutes, or even less than 5, but this one is close to 20, and it's enhanced! Before I review the individual tracks, I want to say that if you're planning on buying this single just for the PLANITb remix of "Simple and Clean," I'd recommend getting the "Kingdom Hearts" soundtrack instead. Now, for the songs:01 COLORS [Japanese]: This is a very good and tranquil piece of music. The vocals have a lot of emotion in them, and a lot of them have a soothing element. Even though I don't understand Japanese it's really nice listening to this song and it actually ended up being my favorite song on the CD, which would account for why it's the single!02 Simple and Clean [English]: It's hard to say what I think of this song. It's good but at the same time there are things about it that aren't that good. For instance, it isn't as good as "Colors," but it's still good. I don't get a whole lot of emotion out of it, though emotion is still there. See what I mean? I'd give it a 3/5 overall. But in case you're wondering about Utada Hikaru's English, it's very good. She pronounces "please" as it should be pronounced rather than as "prease," like some Japanese people do. If I just heard this song and didn't know the name of the artist I wouldn't guess that she was Japanese.03 Simple and Clean -PLANITb Remix- [English]: This song is more than likely the most popular Utada Hikaru song in the US due to "Kingdom Hearts" and is actually the main reason why I bought this single, but it turned out to be one of the less enjoyable tracks! I knew it was going to be longer than the version on "Kingdom Hearts" (it's nearly six minutes long), but I didn't know it was going to sound so incredibly different! It's still a cool song and everything, but it's not as cool as the "Kingdom Hearts" version. Maybe the main reason why I don't like it as much is that it sounds so different and I'm not used to that.04 COLORS -Original Karaoke-: A lot of songs don't really work without the vocals, but this song does. Despite how much the vocals add to this song, it's still a great song without them. I think that's largely due to the many different sounds keeping it interesting. Another good thing about this song is it displays how important music is to songs. Some people think of the vocals in songs as the focus of interest while the music is just sort of there to keep the beat going, but in reality there are many songs with both music and vocals that require both elements to make it work. At any rate, this song is very good, both with and without the vocals. That ought to give you a good idea of what this single is like. Lastly I want to say that if you like relaxing to good music then this is a great single to do it to."
