CD Reviews

Absolute gem. . .
Achis | Kingston, JA/Philipsburg, SxM | 08/08/2002

"(4.5stars) I got this album, which was Turbulence's first after I had gotten the second (Rising) and was very impressed by that one as well. Since then, I have seen this young man in concert with Kalonji and let me say that no cd can do him true justice, he can sing out of this world.
This album is one I would classify as a gem, meaning, it is pretty hard to find, ( I ordered directly from Xterminator )but it is worth the effort. There are 13 tracks, only one that I don't really like (Woman A You) and 12 very beautiful songs that you can just enjoy from a purely musical level, or you can dig into the lyrics for complete understanding and see exactly where this yute is coming from. One of the more interesting things that I notice in this album is that Turbulence, a devout rastafari, rarely directly writes verses where he draws on Selassie I by name, instead he chooses to use indirect mentions, where he'll say "The Lion" or "His Majesty", I find that very interesting, because, including Beenie Man, there aren't many rastafarian artists that write and don't use the word "Selassie I".
There are several tracks that I really like here, the opener Living in Sufferation is fantastic, and a great example of how Turbulence varies back and forth between singing and djaying. Where are Your Wings? is a great upliftment tune for the Black Woman, I like One Gun, I absolutely love Freedom Call, and the closer Don't Let Them Stoop You Low is outstanding as well. If forced to pick a favorite I'd probably say Living in Sufferation. I also like Love Can Make A Difference which VP loved so much, they chose to include it on his second album as well. Overall I say definitely get this one, its an absolutely beautiful project, and a beautiful beginning from one of reggae's most promising future stars. AMAZING"

"Turbulence, the future of conscious music. This CD is just HOT. Turbulence is really proving to be the successor of sizzla and through this young talent we see the impact that artistes like sizzla have on the youth. This album is a fresh change to the conscious music as all the cuts have an uplifting and excitingly different feel. This young artist, the mixture of sizzla, jah cure and anthony B is sure to be a future star. All respects going out to the Xterminator crew and big up to Jah Cure who unfortunstely in jail. Bun dung Babylon and up with Jah palaces."
Turbulence + Xterminator Unleash Future

"This album, a collaboration between mc Turbulence and the production of Xterminator (Fattis Burrell, etc.) is incredible. Xterminator's rhythms develop a liquid bass-boom that echoes in the stereo field, while Turbulence's tight, articulate flow syncopates between melody, harmony, and the rhythm. Some of the tracks had a feel to them that wasn't my thing, but the production remains interesting and fresh. "Hotness a Gwaan" is an excellent minimal shuffle that thunders beneath Turbulence's verbal monsoon. "Treat Her Nice" has a rhythm that stutters between bass thumps and a bubbling liquid, and "Naw Beg No Friend" proves that rockers-style dub can still be booming in 2000. "Rainy Day" has one of the most menacing, apocalyptic beats on the album, and Turbulence more than delivers with vocal stabs; if you like Sizzla, you'll love Turbulence. "Don't Let Them Toop You Low" uses the rhythm from Lion's track "The More Wi Plant" from the Herbalist album, and suits Turbulence well with its panning snare rrrollls and flanging synth swells. Xterminator's production has gotten even better, with an atmospheric, booming future feel. Turbulence himself easily establishes his vocal mastery."
