CD Reviews

Almost perfect

(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you like music for organ and orchestra from the Romantic Period (e.g. Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3, Poulenc's Concerto for Strings, Organ and Timpani), this is for you. Although very expensive, this is a wonderful CD. It contains two pieces by Gounod written for pedal-piano and orchestra, here played by grand organ and orchestra. Especially the concertante is rich in melodies, vivacious and rhythmic. For the French horns, it is a tour de force.

The sound quality is very very good. They perform in a large cathedral with stunning echo.

My only gripe is that it sounds as if the recordings were done only once, and there are two or three moments when it sounds as if the orchestra unravels a bit, as if they recorded in one go and did not come back to correct."
